Why do people use phone calls to relay time-critical messages anymore?

I wake up to a voicemail from the college saying "Pls call back its important". I call back as soon as I'm awake enough, only to reach their voicemail. And I'm sure that they'll call back when I'm on the toilet or in the shower or something, so I'll miss their call and the cycle begins anew.

Yes, texting, IM and email can be a pain, but with those you can send an entire message to be read at the recipient's leisure. It isn't necessary for both people to be at their phone/computer and ready to talk at the same time, which is apparently an astronomically rare occurrence.

I mean, it's almost like it doesn't occur to people that you're allowed to say more than "call me back, k?"

Eh... for whatever reason, there's some folks out there that really don't like leaving messages, particularly ones more than "call back". I've known a fair few folks that'll literally just hang up if the answering machine/voicemail comes on, regardless of the situation. Never gotten around to asking one of them why that is...

Well. I know why it's like that for some of them, but not the ones that are doing it for a reason that doesn't boil down to being exploitative scum. Much easier to fleece a mark in real time than through a static message. Is part of reason why stuff like telemarketers or scam artists will only very rarely leave a message. _{the rest of it is usually because they're using a spoofed number or something equivalent, and won't give a working one regardless -- among other things, it's a lot easier for cops to find them if they give one to their target :V}

It might be just a little irrational. Before I call someone, I have time to think of what to say to them, but if they're not there I only have a few seconds to come up with an acceptable message. It's easier to just hang up and text instead.

Videogames, comics and cartoons are filled with incongruence like that all over the place, they are in simply for cool effect but people cling into those things and try to fill the voids and then you have supersonic spies....

Just like evangelion, people try to give a meaning to all of it and the answer is pretty simple. In Japan Christianity is not as hype and mainstream as Donal Trump would like it to be, so for them Christianity is kind of a cool, unknown thing, that's why the choose to run with it. Basically evangelion has all those christian theme for the same reason douchebags have kanji characters they claim it says "brute force" but in reality it says "sissy princess".
