There's a physical lump of platinum (well, 90% platinum and 10% iridium) called the International Prototype Kilogram. It is the basis for defining what "one kilogram" is, even if it loses or gains mass; the IPK is the kilogram.

Meanwhile, most people use the weight of 1 dm3 of dihydrogen monoxide on Earth at the pressure of 1 bar and the temperature of 298,15 K as their reference for the mass of one kilogram. It's not absolutely exact, but I think more people have access to one litre of water than to a lump of platinum alloy.
