It's weird. We go to his place to spend every weekend. Don't know why.

My mom got into an argument this weekend because she was invited to a birthday party from one of her friends, and he didn't want her to go because he thinks she might cheat on him even though they aren't together. See Pope Francis was elected because he's actually a pretty decent Christian, even if he is Catholic. The sheer volume of people who think "love one another as I loved you" is invalidated because never ceases to depress me.

Popes nowadays are just a popular guy with a funky hat and fancy clothes, not the near god emperors of old who could make kingdoms rise and fall.

Francis managed to do the church well by being the frontman for some reforms and overall good PR, generally bringing ye olde chuch into the present, but the catholic church is still the catholic church, IE a thing that has survived more wars, revolutions and social change then pretty much any other known organizations. It has changed a fair bit, but its core is still there. If that core are actualy the teachings of Jesus, thats up for debate, and that doesn't really matter in this aspect.

Francis is sick and old, new guy will take over and maybe keep the PR ball rolling, but real change will only ever come when the church's inner structure decides to enact some major changes in scripture interpretation, and boy, that would take a second coming, a literal second coming.

I don't know.  As sort of a boots on the ground report, I know the pastor of a Catholic church in my city actively supports allowing priests to conduct gay marriages.  And he did before it was cool.  Hopefully, there will be more like him post-Francis.

And he is currently reforming the thing, so there's that too.

The thing is, not all Christians are Catholic anyway, so even if the Catholic Church suddenly comes out in support of gay marriage, there are still going to be a number of asshats under the Protestant flags.

But then checking up on what heresy actually means, which is just disagreeing with "normal" practice... this is why I have great distaste for religion.

Anyone can be a heretic dweeb and go around in rainbow coloured priest clothing pretending people take them seriously. Actualy changing the church, ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Another big problem is that the groups who expect the church to be nicer to gays also somehow expect them to be more acception of things such as abortion (because those are somehow related for some reason). Now that is some wishful thinking. Might as well go full sedevacatism if that happens.

Supporting gay marriage is heretical in most denominations. At least, Christian gay marriage. I don't really care if they can legally get married, but having a priest or pastor perform it is not really what we're aiming for.

A heretic is anyone who expresses an opinion in contrary to the orthodoxy. I'm a heretical Reformed Christian, ferex, because I don't believe in the six-day creation.

Francis is a conciliarist, which is to say his position is one of decentralization, giving more power to the individual priest in a manner not dissimilar from the orthodox christians. Most popes tend to go in the opposite direction.

On heresy: according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, heresy is having practices that are not of the Catholic (Universal) Church and saying they are the correct ones. So protestants are heretics. Orthodox (and maybe coptic?) christians get called schismatics instead because most differences are political. People who leave the religion are apostates.
