The point was that he was conflating how things work in a harem anime then saying that those things were indicative of a shoujo anime. Shoujo has a very specific meaning: things published in magazines labeled as shoujo. And it just don't work like he said.

shoujo romance series have a bland female lead, and "cool" male characters fighting over her. The typical cliched stuff marketed at girls: the guys are good looking, super-intelligent, rich, athletic rogues, who are usually the captain of the basketball team or school council president or something. Basically characters that would annoy the fuck out of most male readers because of how smug and perfect they are.

shonen romance series have bland male lead, and "hot" female characters fighting over him. The girls will be a range of cliches to suit every taste: girl next door, childhood friend, bossy one, bookworm one etc.

Both types of series are self-insert fantasy fiction, which is why the lead character is bland and a bit hopeless, so you can project yourself into them but also feel "superior" to them ("if it was me instead of loserface..."). The  The MC will also have zero competition as that would break the illusion: exactly why multiple attractive people are fighting over the loser MC.

You know what an awful change of subject is?
Feet. God I hate feet.

But no. You find out later that your feet were hot and their feet were damn fine as they were but they play along because they love you more than they hate your feet.
