you can't print a moving gif.
The hell you can't. We've had flip books since the 1890s. That is how you print a moving .gif.

We should have a 'Neonivek Rants' thread.

Screw that, I'd like a podcast.

Young relatives come round for father's 60th.

Mother offers them knives and matches when preparing for birthday cake.

Is this a "let me teach you how to light the candles and cut the cake", or is it "take these and have fun in the yard"?

How young were those young relatives?
5-10?
I would trust a 10 year old with a knife and matches but not a 5 y.o.

It's a "how about you light the candles and cut the cake", before handing a carving knife to a four year old, and being like, "cut a piece for everyone".

Can't see anything strange about that. Especially under close supervision.
Are you expecting the kid to suddenly have a death wish and plunge the knife into his chest before anyone can react or something?

I was wondering if he'd lose any fingers. So was the parent, which was the real problem... we don't want a reputation for the child-murdering branch of the family, deserved or not.

Well you could have grabbed him by the hand and guided it (and the knife).
That's what i did with my 5 yo nephew on my birthday anyway.

Then again their parent should probably have a say in this... so yeah.

No, but one of the first reactions young people have for new shiny objects is to taste them. A lot of things can go wrong here very fast.

Tasting objects is something a kid stops doing around being 2 years old maybe 3 tops.
Not a 4+ year old. There is a very big gap in intelectual capacity between 3 and 4 years imho.
In fact i sometimes play video games with my nephew and he was pretty good at handling a gamepad since when he was around 4, and i'm quite sure he didn't insert it in his mouth.
I knew how to connect a Commodore 64 to a TV and load a game on tape when i was 5 for Pete's sake and i'm positive that neither me or my nephew were geniuses at any point.

You underestimate the intelligence of a child.
Are you expecting the kid to suddenly have a death wish and plunge the knife into his chest before anyone can react or something?
You overestimate the wisdom of a child.

Children can be surprisingly smart about things, but a bit lacking in common sense. Still, why would you give knives and matches to a child?
