I'm going to guess that that's some sort of arts-and-humanities paper and, at the very end, they use some obscure thought trick by a long-dead obscure philosopher to completely change the meaning of the question. That sort of "You can't prove that I'm wrong so there" and "if you really think about it, aren't we all just (something that makes no sense)" reasoning turned up a lot in philosophy and thought-experiment papers that I had to read for communications classes.

That stuff always reminds me of Arielle Schlesinger, the postmodern tech girl. She reviewed a book on user-interface design and was bemoaning that it focused on "capitalist" values such as user-friendliness and performance rather than "wrestling with what seems impossibly unknowable".

So she had the shits because textbooks on UI design teach comp. sci. students how to make it easy for the human to interact with the computer, rather than on how to produce UI's that make you question the very notion of being and existence itself.

It's like all those moments where you ask "But how do you reeeeeaaally know?" as a smartass joke when the teacher explains that 1 +1 = 2, but actually taken to a conclusion. A really, really stupid conclusion, based on unprovable hypotheses which are based on yet more unprovable hypotheses which are based on thought experiments which are based on an offhand comment that had nothing to do with the entire field of metaphilosophy that it eventually spawned.

I remember once reading somewhere about a book that spent something like 200 pages to provide sufficient proof that 1 = 1 ≠ 2 ≠ 0. Probably wasn't a reliable source, though, and I might remember wrong.
