New York. I live out in the sticks, but when most people hear "New York" they think the city. It is a great source of salt among us.

There's this funny story my father told me one time, actually, about this sort of thing; this guy he knew who raises horses went out on a horse-riding trip in, uh, some state out in the Midwest, after he won a contest or something. When he told the people he was with where he lived, he was met with quizzical looks and confusion as to where he kept his horses, at which point he jokingly went along with it and told them he simply chained them to bike racks.

I was actually going to guess New Orleans, Louisiana. Then again, I'm a musician, and not very familiar with any state in the US, for that matter.

New York is huge. How could anyone think NYC covered the entire state?

It's not so much that as it is people assuming that everyone from New York is from the city until told otherwise.

I also hear that some who are unfamiliar with American geography aren't aware it's a state and believe there's just the city, but I have yet to meet someone of this persuasion.

I've yet to see anyone assume that I live in New York City. Then again, most people I talk to live in the same general region I do, and Long Islanders aren't that goddamned stupid yet.
