So this may have been mentioned earlier in the thread, but youtube seem to have got out a bunch more updates.

And now I can't watch HD videos without the image slowing and getting out of sync with the sound, because apparently, the need to show me every frame or whatever is more important than giving me something that plays videos properly.

I can load videos in HD, possibly, but at the moment, it seems to take roughly twice the video length.

Well, that was the end of an era I didn't know was happening. :(

Last week, a semi-local teenager was electrocuted while trying to build a Jacob's Ladder via video instructions. The kid's grandfather has stated that "YouTube was the culprit. It needs to be stopped.”

How badly was the kid electrocuted? I hope they had at least some basic electrical knowledge and didn't try to use outlet power for it.

The word "Electrocuted" means "killed by electricity". The device he assembled used a power supply from a microwave plugged directly into an outlet.

Not to be confused with the other Jacob's ladder.

No... no it doesn't. It's possible to survive being electrocuted.

Quote from: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/electrocute
electrocute ‎(third-person singular simple present electrocutes, present participle electrocuting, simple past and past participle electrocuted)
  • (transitive) To cause death from immediate complications resulting from electric shock.
He was electrocuted for his crimes.
  • (informal) To inflict a severe electric shock, not necessarily fatally.
Usage notes
Formally, the words electrocute and electrocution always imply fatality. Informally, however, these terms are rather often used to refer to serious but nonfatal electric shocks. Strictly correct usage is to reserve electrocute and electrocution for fatal electric shocks, and to use shock or electric shock for nonfatal ones.

So you think a wiki is a good counter for a dictionary? :P

(The dictionary, in any case, reflects the common usage, not one chosen via pedantry.)

I use only the formal definition of the word. If I use "electrocute/ed/ion", somebody is dead, or was at great risk of (in cases like "Alice narrowly avoided electrocution because Bob cut the power just in time") death.

@Shadowlord
I'll counter your dictionary with another.

Not to be confused with the other Jacob's ladder.

Or the original Jacob's Ladder.
Or the fairly common toy.

It's also apparently a form of genital piercing. Thank you, wikipedia, I don't think I actually wanted to know that.

... though yeah, electrocuted for non-fatal shocks is. Very common? I'm pretty sure most english speakers wouldn't be particularly confused by that usage. Really, I'd guess that most would be more confused by using it strictly for fatal shocks than they would it being used more loosely.

So you think a wiki is a good counter for a dictionary? :P
My meaning was in no way to counter anything, just to show what a dictionary has to say on the matter (you ninja'd me). I probably should have added a comment on how I didn't know beforehand that the nonlethal meaning was informal. Either way, we now know what Lord Shonus meant with the original statement.

Also, is Wiktionary not a dictionary?
