Any way to put soil/dirt back down so that trees can grow?
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:33:24 pm »

I've channeled out some areas on the surface and put a wall in place in the z-level below.  Any possible way to get dirt to be on the top of that wall after the fact?

I know I should've left the dirt there and dug it out from below...it's too late for that.  So just wondering if it's possible to fix the mistake.

Just cover it with water, should do it, I think. Remember anywhere that is exposed to the surface, stays exposed to the surface forever, no matter the subsequent cover built.

I think so, but it's not easy.

First, you need to create a square of natural rock.  Constructed walls won't work for this.  To make a natural rock wall you will have to channel out the space under where you want the soil to be, then fill the channel with magma.  Now pour water over the magma, and you will have a line of natural rock tiles.

Next, you need the rock to be muddied.  Pouring the water to make the natural rock tiles should already have accompanied this.

Now you wait.  Provided you're in a biome where aboveground trees grow, you should eventually have saplings and then trees grow on the muddied rock.  This assumes that aboveground trees will grow on aboveground muddied rock, that I'm not actually completely sure of.

Once a tree has grown, cut it down.  This should cause the space where the tree was growing to revert to the natural surface type for that spot, which in this case will be soil.

It's always been my observation that mud does not permit trees to grow outdoors - only unmined soil walls underneath will work. Evidence to the contrary would be most interesting.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Wasn't there some trick about constructing a floor and then deconstructing a floor changes it back to whatever "that layer" is mostly composed of?

There is, but that won't do anything to the wall beneath it.

One of the dwarfs walked in front of Thor to get a better view of the prye, and Thor kicked him irritably into the middle of the flames, which made Thor feel slightly better and made all the dwarfs feel much worse.
