Animal trap question

I made an animal trap, but before I could constructively use it a lizard (vermin) wandered into it while it was sitting in my stock pile. I'm a bit of a newb. So how do I get it out or butcher it? My butcher shop doesn't seem to have the option to slaughter it.

Animal traps only capture vermin-size creatures, which can't be butchered.

Very odd that a creature would just wander into it while it was in a stockpile, I've never seen that happen.

You can build a cage and assign the lizard to the cage.  Dwarves who like lizards will get a good thought from seeing it.  Dwarves who hate lizards will get a bad thought from seeing it.

Or you can tame it and then make it available for adoption, and then a dwarf who likes lizards may eventually adopt it and then carry it around with them.

Yes, assuming that you have a dwarf with the Animal Trainer skill.  I'm still not sure how you got the lizard in the first place if you don't have a kennel, since the task to capture a small animal is performed through the kennel in the first place.  You might have gotten it if you bought or stole a cage from the elves that happened to contain a lizard.

Are you guys talking about cage traps or animal traps?

I too am getting vermin sized creatures from my animal traps. Wasn't really sure what they were used for, or what I might catch with gems. I see I get 'live lizard' in the unit list but like you say I can't slaughter them. What's the point of animal traps?

Certain captured vermin can be processed to create trade goods - for example, if you catch fire snakes from a volcano or the magma sea, you can extract liquid fire and sell it to caravans for 500☼ per vial (plus the value of the vial itself). Also, if you manage to capture purring maggots from the caverns, you can milk them and make dwarven cheese.

Animal traps are for capturing vermin-sized animals.  At the moment, these aren't terribly useful.  A few of them, such as moghoppers and fire snakes, can be processed for valuable extracts.  Any vermin can be put on display in a constructed cage, or tamed and made available for adoption and then become the pet of a dwarf.  Other than that, they're pretty much useless.

Seriously the lizard just wandered into it. The trap was sitting unbaited in my stockpile.

How do I put it on display?

I think dwarves can eat vermin in animal traps, but won't unless they're really hungry.

I'm not sure though, it's been forever since i fiddled with them.
