Improve hauling efficiency with containers
« on: October 20, 2010, 02:31:24 am »

Just an idea because it's now faster to make objects then to carry them to destination, which's rather ridiculous.

When a hauler try to haul objects that can be placed in a container i.e. barrels, bins, bags they will first try to pick up a free appropriate container then proceed to pick up the item and put them in the container. If the container isnt full, they'll then look at the tile and see if there are any items of the same type that need hauling and will proceed to pick them up and put them in the container. Repeat until container is full. They'll then bring these items to destination and transfer the content to the designated containers there if any. Afterward if the container is empty and there's a container stockpile, they'd return it there. Else they'll leave the container there and do something else.

It would be useful to group jobs based on spatial proximity elsewhere too. For example, if you designate three squares to be mined, the game fetches three miners, even though it would be done faster and by using less personnel if only one miner mined out the three squares.

You wish.

I wish he would work on multicore support to enable longer games. Major hauling problems are just bad fortress design, imo.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

When dwarves pick up seeds and socks one by one, that's a hauling problem. I don't know how you do your laundry though.
