Tropical versus Temperate in worldgen
« on: October 19, 2010, 07:22:59 pm »

I think the concensus is that tropical biome embarks are more interesting than their temperate equivalents.

I can't seem to find on the boards or wiki any definitive information as to what factors determine whether tropical or temperate result from worldgen.  It doesn't appear to be simply temperature - is it some elaborate result of seasonal temperature variation?

Obviously I'm interested so I can tinker with worldgen parameters to increase tropical embarks.

Temperature would affect it I would think...could you give a very narrow temperature range in the worldgen parameters?  so, 40-60 or 45-55 for example.  See what effect this has...Also try increasing rainfall

Latitude. One end of the map is tropical (scorching), the other end is arctic (freezing), and it gradually changes in-between. The temperature settings in the worldgen parameters are just for local variation.

Also I've never heard of such a "consensus." Everyone has their own preferences.

I'm still waiting for that perfect world generation with tropical coniferous forest, temperate coniferous forest, and desert, all savage.  :D

I have that, but not savage.  Granted, this gen is so varied that I've got just about everything.

At least in 40d tropical was it's own tag applied somewhat randomly so you could get rather cold tropical areas and such. It was nigh impossible to get much of it in medium world gens but it showed up in decent frequency for large worlds.

If you have ever used perfect world you'd see that rain fall affects it as well. You can have two regions both on the same latitude one desert and one tropical simply because of rain shadow from the mts. I unfortunately don't know how to mess with the rain shadow though. I used perfect world for all that in .12 and I don't know if it is updated for .16

This. For both statements.

After trying some different biomes, I now tend to settle for at least a desert and an ocean at my preferred embark site. Any other biome is optional. And extra points for savagery/evil.

Do you also happen to know how large such areas are? Given that I'm a rabid importer of exotic animals, it might be worth taking that into account for future embarks.

I like an area that's mostly tropical joyous wilds, with a terrifying corner. "Ah, that. Yes, we usually don't go there."

You have to look at the political map in legends mode.
