Uniform interface
« on: October 19, 2010, 04:11:40 pm »

I just wanted to vent how incredibly frustrating, obtuse and dysfunctional the uniforms interface is. Why can't we change uniforms after squad creation? Why can't we reselect the standard selection? Why is ENTER (the confirmation key) used as DELETE? Why WHy WY WRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!! >sob<

That is all.

You can change uniforms after squad creation. Go to the [e]quip menu, then select assign {U}niforms.

It isn't that bad. It's badly in need of a copy+paste function, but it's pretty alright.

Its also quite easy to use the mouse in the military screens if you aren't the keyboard type.

I agree with Silverionmox, though - it can be quite frustrating.  The inconsistency on what is used to move up/down/sideways in lists is my biggest (and probably only real) complaint about the DF user-interface.  I don't really care whether Toady sticks with the +/- method or the arrow keys, I just want it to work the same everywhere so I don't have to keep trying to remember whether the screen I want to manipulate uses +/- or arrows. :/

The easist way to solve the directional arrows thing is thusly:

1-try the arrows.
2-if nothing happens, try the -/+ buttons.

That should fix it up.

The easy way to tell if you're going to be dealing with arrow keys is if the regular z levels and such screen is open. If it is open up and down have the meaning of moving the screen, period. If it is not open they are available for scrolling through lists and tend to cause the smallest type of movement, such as moving from one mechanisms from the next rather than from furniture to whatever is the next big item.

This has only become slightly misaligned with screens that go several lists deep, in which case it is all arrows and I don't think +- even do anything.
So just pay attention to what options you've got. It's mostly arrow keys whenever it can be and Toady's trying to make more lists where it can be.

But yeah. Go into equipment and set what uniform dudes use there. When selecting it in the third column enter will assign it to the highlighter dwarf and shift enter will assign it to his whole squad. Much much better than trying to shuffle dudes around and altering the uniforms themselves like I tried to do before diving into the wiki for this n_n

The only way to ensure the interface working the way you (and most other ppl) want it is to send death threats to toady's physical mailbox :o

I want to change the uniform of the squad, so I select (u)niforms. It sounds logical, doesn't it? Not in DF!
Anyway, the way to prevent those problems is to change the colour scheme (background and/or foreground), to stress that both screens are different. Very important, since they share most of their menu options. That goes as well for the bottom menu, since that remains the same event though the rest of the screen changes as you switch options.

I don't make that connection.

I dunno, it always seemed fairly straightforward to me.

I generally assign everything individually. And yes, it really does need a copy/paste or assign-same-to-squad function.

I want to change what equipment they wear so I go to the equip screen. It sounds logical doesn't it? Not in- oh wait, that's how it does work.

-

You can assign to everyone in the squad. In the equip pane just select the uniform and hold down shift when you hit enter.

<U>niforms menu is for editing uniform configurations.

<e>quip menu is for equipping uniforms to your dwarfs.

I'm hoping we see an external utility (I was hoping for it to part of Dwarf Therists, but that's died),
for controlling your military.
(uniforms, alerts, squads, equitpemnt and the rest).

I actually like the interface (once you get over your preconceived notions of what "alert" and "uniforms" should mean) but there are a couple functions that it needs like say:

1) setting multiple (or all) items to the same material type, i.e. all steel
2) Being able to copy/past uniforms. Having to go through and specify a full set of steel armor again just because I want one uniform for axedwarves and another for hammerdwarves is annoying (I've ended up just specifying a full armor uniform then doing weapons individually).

Other then that the only problem is getting the dwarves to actually put on the right uniforms.

I'd like it if the alerts and uniforms could read their data out of an init file. You would probably just ignore any burrow restrictions when saving and loading it but it makes sense that we've got to redefine those every time- and I suppose you might want different uniforms in different forts (without just having a long ass list to describe everything you'd wanna do) so Probably make writing to the file a manual thing, like saving macros.

...or you could use macros to set up your steel armor uniforms and then manually choose the weapon. Then it's "like" copying and pasting it.
