Lambs to the slaughter.
« on: October 19, 2010, 01:13:13 am »

I just had every single dwarf in my fortress run through my gauntlet of traps outside right as a goblin ambush showed up.

All hauling and cleaning labors were disabled.  All loot was forbidden.

What the fuck.

Never underestimate a dorf's sixth sense to detect a littered, unowned sock...dwarven or otherwise.

Burrows!   :D

I did, as soon as the ambush popped up.  Every dwarf in the fortress besides the military.  They ignored it, and just kept doing what they were doing.   Like I said before, what the fuck.

Whoa, calm down man. Losing is Fun!

You could go to the orders menu and forbid the socks and shoes etc from dead dwarves caught outside.

Yes, it's fun.  I was laughing while saying "what the fuck".   Also, not the title is intended to be humorous.

There are certain things that do not respect forbidden status or o-F-(cio) orders settings, e.g. caged animals can be marked for butchering even though their cage is forbidden, and sometimes merchants that die end up with some of their items un-forbidden on their death.  I think this is a new bug in 31.16, I don't believe ths kind of thing happened in previous versions.  I just keep a sharp eye on my entrance if any merchants outside the perimeter die.

You need to look at units or jobs and see what they were trying to do.

Also dwarves on break don't listen to anything you say and can sometimes walk around aimlessly. For some damn reason the south east corner of the map is my dwarves favorite hiking spot while on break. Nevermind that it is accross the river and about 40 tiles from my fortifications.

One of the dwarfs walked in front of Thor to get a better view of the prye, and Thor kicked him irritably into the middle of the flames, which made Thor feel slightly better and made all the dwarfs feel much worse.

In addition to setting burrows, did you activate a civilian alert?  That's all I can think of.  Otherwise build adoor and lock it.

Of course, but, well, Dwarves are not overly intelligent.

Of course, but, well, Dwarves are not overly intelligent.

Then what you're describing should be impossible without some other factor in play:

Is there a part of the assigned burrow(s) outside of the fortress?  For example, did you designate a burrow such that one little corner is poking outside of a wall?

Does the assigned burrow extend all the way through the "gauntlet of traps"; or, at least, far enough for civilians to see an enemy and get scared?  Once scared, they don't obey burrow restrictions.

Do you have any burrow anywhere that is explicitly outside of the fortress, like a "mining" burrow or somesuch?  If so, are you completely sure you didn't tell "every single dwarf in your fortress to run through your gauntlet of traps outside right as a goblin ambush showed up"?

Well, the entire mountain was dug out pretty much for about 30 z-levels, so it's entirely possible I hit the surface somewhere.  But that makes me wonder why the goblins didn't charge in there, then, instead of through the long, winding gauntlet of traps and pitfalls and Dwarven Atom Smashers.

This has ate my lunch before. if your burrow is huge and you just can't find it, delete and start over again.

That's not a case of ignoring forbidden status - the animals themselves aren't forbidden, just the cage. If you've got, say, a barrel of meat and you forbid the barrel but don't forbid the meat (or unforbid the meat) then a kitchen making roasts will quite happily take the meat out of the forbidden barrel and use it, and it's the same idea with animals in a cage, or any crap in bins. Forbidding the cage just means the dwarves won't move the cage, but the stuff inside it is still fair game.

And, well, strictly speaking, it wouldn't be ignoring forbidden status anyway, since you can mark something for slaughter without the dwarves actually being able to access it (e.g. animals in a pit), it's just that those animals will remain marked for slaughter until they die of natural causes, in combat or a dwarf is finally able to path to it and take it to a butcher's workshop :P

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.
