Things you know that you do not know...
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:24:35 pm »

I have no idea if an aquifer floor tile on its own will act as a water drain. I know that it will dump water downwards. But if it was suspended in water by itself would it act as a drain? No idea.

Anyone else have any mysteries of dwarf fortress they want to share?

Cave ins displace water directly on top of falling walls.

The science that I have performed thus far on aquifers has shown that the water in aquifers springs forth from the exposed edges of unmined aquifer tiles (the floor being the bottom 'edge' in this case).  Thus, once you expose the actual 'floor' of the aquifer tile, it ceases to produce or absorb water, from either above or below.

Disclaimer: This is my personal experience, maybe I was 'doing it wrong' or had something anomalous going on in the forts where I have messed with aquifers, so if someone else has done any experimentation with this and has come up with differing results, let me know.

What I don't know???

How to use burrows well...  I have yet to even attempt to place a burrow in 2010, I am not even sure why I have avoided them.

How to use the military screen beyond activating a couple dwarves, forcing them to use some gear, then sending them to places or giving kill tasks with the 's'quad menu...[/i]  Forget setting up any sort of schedule or training, I train my military by stationing them over some spike traps, or by locking them in a room with random creatures I have caught in cage traps and releasing the animals.

How to make hospitals work well and not be annoying...  I have attempted to make hospitals a few times and they always end up either spawning grounds for creeping death of various sorts, or a place for dwarves with broken legs to chill for eternity while the doctors take turns playing with a bucket by the water source...  In my forts, injured dwarves fend for themselves, the closest thing to a hospital I build is a bed dropper so I can dump all the wounded in some magma and leave it at that.  Thankfully I do not have many casualties, as I tend to engineer for safety and try to take care of as many threats as possible without getting face to face to them with the military.

I was in the same boat until this week.

Basically, you just paint whatever you want to be in the burrow the same way you designate mining.

I finally did it and got my dorfs to stop running outside for Urist McDead's socks when goblins were out and about. Give it a shot, it makes things a little more convenient.

I've never used burrows. I know how to use them, I just haven't encountered a situation where they'd be convenient yet.

It depends on how you play.  If you make one entrance into your fortress that has an impassable drawbridge when it is raised, and always raise it at the first sign of trouble, it probably won't be of much use to you to have burrows.  For me, I like to try to keep the dwarves outside alive, so I'll either keep that open or have an alternate route that involves traps.  Basically, it is telling your dwarves to get inside before they might see the goblins..

If you want to get really fancy, you can assign dwarves to specific sleeping quarters next to their workshops and a dining room/kitchen, and make it so that that area is only for the people who use the workshops (masons go next to masonry shops, capenters next to carpentry, etc).  I have never done this though, it seems like more trouble than its worth.  I could see it being immensely useful if you like creating fortresses that are spread out, or have a living area near the magma sea for forges and a living area near the surface for military and carpentry, and then maybe one in the middle for everything else, and only want a dedicated team of haulers taking things in between, and the rest staying in their area.

I know that I don't know if there has ever been a clown sickness that has NOT been fatal.

All mine always end up "random" in the sense that, of the 6-10 ways that it COULD kill my dwarves, one is always faster than the others. Sometimes their lungs bruise so heavily they suffocate in their own bodily fluids, sometimes they completely bleed out internally, sometimes they pass out from dizzyness and vomiting and get thrown into walls at 100000000 mph, sometimes the bruises are so bad they ALL get infected and it's just a matter of which infection gets the killing blow, and sometimes you just have a plain old massive brain bruise that shuts the thing down entirely.

Seriously, has anyone ever had a dwarf get clown sickness and live? I've worked out a near guarenteed method of killing them with raw military power, the only problem is half the time they survive to die after the fight, and sometimes it's fast enough to kill them during it. :/

Actually I have the opposite problem. Right now my dwarves all live in the middle of the caverns with no defenses aside from some cage traps at natural chokepoints, and there's not really any place I can put a burrow that's more or less safer than any other place. Aside from the settlement inside the ring of scattered cage traps and away from the edge where a troll might spawn and strangle things, but they're already in the settlement so I don't see the point of making a burrow there.

I guess that they are kinda sealed away from the goblins, but it's not my fault that the frozen major river canyon the entrance to my fortress is in the middle of melts for half the year.
