Custom t-shirts
« on: October 18, 2010, 02:28:38 pm »

I've seen some custom Dwarf Fortress t-shirts online, but they all were pretty expensive.  I'm thinking of designing a simple DF shirt just to spread the word about how awesome it is.  If I order in bulk, I can get shirts as cheap as $8.69 each (25+ shirts) or even $5.76 each (100+ shirts).

I just wanted to gauge the interest of the community in general.  Have people already done this before and you already have a DF shirt?  If I made a design you were interested in, would you be willing to pay $6-$9 dollars for the shirt, plus $3 for some slow shipping?

Even if only 25 people are interested, I would be happy to mock up some designs in Photoshop (on a similar vein to these: http://www.zazzle.com/dwarf+fortress+gifts), place the order, and ship them out.

$12 is quite a bit to be paying for a T-shirt.

And what the hell is this about other people selling overpriced DF-themed shirts? I want in on that racket Someone ought to tell Toady about this.

If it came down to an actual design, just the gray or silver ASCII dwarf icon on a black shirt would be fine. A few phrases wouldn't be bad.

You should probably ask Toady about this sort of thing first.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a DF shirt, but it seems a little... exploitative.

Hate to be mister buzzkill, but hey.

We should organize a charity T-shirt selling thing! Like every shirt sold is such and such dollars donated to toady or something.

Alternatively, Toady could just, you know, get royalties.  Like he is entitled to.

The t-shirt I want is just the ASCII smiley face that represents the dwarf. That's in the Public Domain. However, I want to support Toady, so I'd like "Dwarf Fortress" or something on it to promote this game.

In my opinion, DF tshirts are a great idea, but Toady needs some kind of cut before I would buy one. But I would certainly buy one of the better designs. I would like the design of the original ascii landscape.

If I were making a profit off it I would be happy to just pass it on.  What my goal, is to get as many people as possible who want a shirt, that way I can get the bulk pricing for the online custom shirts, then figure out what the exact shipping costs, etc will be for each shirt, and ask that you pay only that amount.  Totally for not profit.  I will definitely post where I bought them so people can price check if they would like to.

I think that is a good suggestion to ask Toady about it first, and I will.  However, I'm not opening a T-shirt shop here, I'm just talking about making a one-time big t-shirt order, just so we can all get some custom DF shirts without each of us having to pay a bunch for one.

I could see that as being a good deal right now, but I would definitely be in support of creating a store that makes profits to help pay to make this game.  Plus, that would be more useful to me than simply donating.

As for some design ideas, what about having three levers (actual levers, not the symbol in-game), and underneath it says "One of these levers stops the goblin siege, one floods your base with magma, and one caves the world into the magma sea below.  And you don't remember which is which.  Time for Fun! [sic]"

I had an idea for a dwarf fortress T-shirt:  it would be a black shirt with the purple dungeon master character on it (not the solid filled in purple character, the outline character), drawn very large so it takes up the whole shirt.  Using the 800x600 font so that the smiley face has a beard.  On the back or at the bottom it would say "The Dungeon Master ponders fell beasts and treasure."  And it would have a URL for dwarf fortress or bay 12 games.  I've been meaning to use some online T-shirt designing site to make one for myself.

You should make some artifact shirts with their descriptions on the back and all sorts of designs on the front and shoulders. I'd totally buy one.
