Is military training faster under an experienced teacher?
« on: October 18, 2010, 02:15:04 pm »

Will a squad learn faster if their teacher, or squad leader is very experienced?

The teacher skill itself no doubt has some impact but simply having high levels in skills like fighter or axe user translates into significantly improved growth rates for everyone else in the squad. Dwarves basically learn things on their own at an exponential rate till they may be gaining around five skill levels in offence skills per season or something in that ballpark. They also manage to teach any sparring partners at about the same rate so instead of it taking a year for everyone to go from dabblers to the 6th(ish) level they may well be legendary by then. I shuffled my squads three times giving one or two partners each time and my fight legendaries only gained 5 levels in teacher- as stated people grew much much faster under these dudes. I had a solo group off on their own who started a season later but were still only about 6 or 7 at their highest when everyone else was legendary.

*Legendary is 15 but the skills actually cap out at 20. The increases in attributes like agility and endurance may also make a big difference.

Teacher seems to impart skills in bigger increments at a time for training sessions more than anything else.  The best teacher you can give your military is the Danger Room setup of a barracks which civilians are forbidden to enter that is equipped with lots of single no-quality training spears as upright spikes set to be raised and lowered indefinitely by a lever or pressure plate.  Just make sure your military has no pets or babies, because even though no-quality training spears are about as effective as a limp noodle at doing damage, unarmored and unclothed targets can and will take a lot of damage even from something so weak.

Thanks for the reply Shoku, that's exactly what I wanted to know.  I just made a new squad, but they were all green, so I'll have to go back and shuffle them so everyone learns faster.

You forget that a limp noodle has a wobbly attribute to it. In fact, its characteristics and shape may liken it to a small whip made out of food.
In this sense, the limp noodle is a dangerous thing and should be slurped with extreme caution, lest your lips go flying off in an arc.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Whips are blunt though.

Well if you only have someone with two or three skill levels then don't bother putting them in the squad, the time they spent doing demonstrations wouldn't really be worth it. With all green recruits they should rarely be more than a level apart and thus they'll mostly just spar. If he's like proficient or greater then go for it and he'll probably still manage to gain skill levels pretty quick while he teaches.
