Buying a new game.
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:54:49 am »

This seemed the most appropriate place to put this for now. Anyway, I am thinking of buying some new games, I don't have a chance to do this often for what should be obvious reasons. I am a fan of RPGs and Strat games though I do enjoy some games outside of those areas. At the moment I'm thinking of getting Mount & Blade, but do you have any suggestions?

If you want to get M&B get Warband, the multiplayer is fun and most mods are being converted to it and new ones are being made.

What are the differances between normal and Warband?

Does it really matter?

It has more stuff and costs exactly as much.

Get Supreme Commander 2, i wouldn't look at starcraft 2 until their price drops and more maps are made.

I'd recommending trying the europa universalis demo, i've gotten a ton of mileage out of it.

Warband adds a new nation and generally just enhances the game, look at the website or the Steam page if you want to know.

Not that I'm biased, but if anuone asked me if they should buy any of the blizzard games I would answer: a resounding no.
The answer is because of some monster called ActivisionBlizzard.
Not that I'm against fusions, but I'm against a certain very evil guy.

Mass Effect, both one and two, have had nothing to do with ActivisionBlizzard.

I had a similar dilemma recently. I would say the most intriguing games on the market right now are:

Dragon Age (Don’t have)
Mount and Blade Warband  (Don’t have Warband, just vanilla)
King’s Bounty (Don’t have, but everyone swears by it)
Civilization 5 (Have and love)
The Guild 2 (Just bought… looks okay so far)
Starcraft 2 (Don’t have)
Star Ruler (Don’t have)
Elemental: War of magic (Have, you should really avoid this one)

Ehh, those are the games I have been thinking about purchasing. I went with The Guild, not exactly sure why. I think part of the decision was that my wife has been reading the book “Sons”, the second in “The Good Earth” trilogy, and a lot of the events in the book sound like they came from a “The Guild” LP.

Personally, I would say avoid Mass Effect. I thought the game was pretty bad. Combat in that game is really clunky. It is hard to get yourself killing the right people before the target and shoot you at AI speeds, even with pause. I am pretty sure I am in the minority on my assessment, but I only played that game for a few hours before uninstalling.

Really though, I’d suggest getting some old games, if you haven’t played them. Age of Wonders is on Steam and Impulse and it is a great old time Strat game. I like all of the versions differently, but equally.

Impulse also has Master of Orion 2, one of my all time favorites. Good Old Gamers has Fallout 1 and 2, which are both a hell of a lot of fun, even if they are a bit dated.

Some of my best memories come from Mass Effect. Combat isn't really what it's about - at least, it wasn't for me. Also, powers and gear are important. Always try to get good gear, and spam powers. ME2 did the power thing better IMO; the best playthrough of ME1 I had was with the Soldier.

I might get Starcraft 2, just to see what the fuss is all about.

I've considered getting Starcraft 2 but:
It has to connect to the internet once a month, or it gets locked out.
I am not very good at RTS games. People online are. I will get crushed over and over.
