Re: Jaycraft Minecraft Server: VOTE ON THE TERTIARY MAP

Tylui added a dynamic map.
It updates (slowly) when blocks are placed or destroyed.  A chunk is only added to the map once updated in that manner, so most is as yet missing.  For this reason, it is not yet replacing the static maps.
EDIT: It is integrated with the site now.

Hehehe it's like stalking the server from a satellite! You can see people moving and talking and stuff. This is awesome.

Edit: Hmm looks like it doesn't know which map people are on, but that's a pretty minor complaint.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

FFFFFF.
So the multiverse turns out to be unthreaded.
Major-ass slowdown on the server end from these maps.
I'll bug Dinnerbone until he gets around to threading them (as I don't see why they can't be), but in the meantime, let's take a vote.
Do we prefer the lack of lag or the MultiVerse?
Thus:
Should we run multiple worlds?

I guess depends on whether your server host can handle it?

"Yes but it lags."

Would "multiple worlds" include the Nether? Truth be told I don't think I'll ever really go back to Wicked, but I've been looking forward to the Nether.

I'm doing a LAN minecraft project, which is why I haven't been on for a while.

Jaycraft has, once again, left IRC, but the server is still up.

Also, I really suspect that at least some of the lag problems might be the java garbage collector. Apparently, the default one is good enough, but minecraft runs better if you find a particularily good combination of startup parameters, since when the garbage collector has a lot of work to do, it pauses the rest of the program, so using a garbage collector that is set up to aim for running less than half a second even if it means running more often, or in a number of separate threads, will noticably pause the game far less often.

The reason for my suspicion is that one of the times when lag can be bad, is when a player exits the server. That would probably unload a whole bunch of nearby chunks, and whatever data is attached to them, leaving far more garbage to collect than usual.

Unless it's already running with a fairly optimal GC for the server specs, and in that case, I cant imagine how much worse it might be.

Bump, our awful host crashed the server again today.
No major damage to the map that I can see, and it's back online now.

Oh man. :( Well if I get a chance to do it today, maybe I'll start making the switch... I have a few things I have to wrap up at work, but it shouldn't take me too long, I don't think...

Bumping.  We're going to keep the Nether because it seems to not harm the server's performance too horribly.

Given that he's  stopped forcing updates, I would have kept it on CB with 1.2, but oh well.
Will update OP.

I logged into the server to see how many people were on... 3 were on, and all three didn't know about the update. In the same amount of time it took me to figure that out i had 4 people try to connect but get disconnected for "Outdated Server!"...

The launcher isn't very... Common yet.
