BiomeTerrain is pretty awesome, but sadly it only works in singleplayer.
I'm not opposed to having a restriction on map size, like what the PA people do on their server. Even them with their crazy constructions usually never fill up the map too much. But if there is a multiplayer alternative we may as well go with that.

Terrain Tweaker seems to work on multiplayer.

As I said, while I would like to use BiomeTerrain we may as well go with Terrain Tweaker.

I however am opposed to map size restrictions. It doesn't seem natural.

And what if you need a certain location to build, like I have done several times? Such locations may be hard to come by, and one may need to explore to find one.

I don't object to a new map, if an op helps me by creating 3 humongous blocks of stone so I can carve my towers instead of building em from the ground up ;)

I wonder whats with the server being down this morning? Maintenance?

As for a hypothetical new map, it would be cool if we had more natural looking biomes instead of fragmented pieces here and there.

EDIT: Guys, check out the server maps! You can see the corrupted trenches on the map, west of the quarry! Thats the one I've kept running into.

Limited maps? who came up with that? It'd suck.
Also blender sucks too.

On cuboid woes, I agree that it can be annoyning at times to dig huge volumes, however it really eases geometric drawing if you aren't geometrically gifted. (me for instance). I say keep it for ops, and perhaps coming up with some solution to use it as a drawing aid for non ops would really help.

And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

I agree with the limited map restriction not being good. Some constructions require a huge amount of space and sometimes people want to build in remote places for whatever reason.

Having more flat areas would help reduce map expansion as people wouldn't have to go so far to find them.

Oh yea, I did actually reveal a bit of the map yesterday, but its just of the landmass to the west of the quarry, which I wanted to explore anyway.

I don't think limiting the map size would have much of an effect at all.  We tend to expand the map to a certain size and then it just stays pretty much that size until the next reset.  It's not like it would be SMALL and limited, just so that we don't get something like the Soul-loop from this map.  Plus it would help Jay/Tylui control the filesize of the map if they want the keep it under more control.  It'd theoretically be possible for a griefer to repeat this chunk resetting madness by just exploring a ridiculous amount so the map fills the server space we have (from my understanding of what happened anyway).  The main problem I see for limiting the map size is that you have to actively chop parts of the map that go beyond where you want it to, so it makes more work for Jay/Tylui (unless you can use cuboid or something to restrict movement? or maybe just a giant adminium wall?).

Also that cave/floating continents effect is pretty awesome.  I'm going to have to try that in single player.

I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

It could be set to auto warp people back if they are X tiles beyond the spawn point. Still feels like a moot point for me, unless so said server size would be as big as our current server. Smaller servers end up looking jampacked with everyone's creations and look more like a carnival than some dreamland or whatever. It annoys me. Much.
Not to mention giant mario sprites. But we don't have giant mario sprites. Fortunately. Those annoy me much more.

Remember, the Penny Arcade people did it and they never filled up a map. And these people made huge projects like Rapture, floating cities and the like. It would be a huge area about the size of the main area of the current map minus the southern loop. It could work, although if people are actively opposed to it still then I'll buckle to the crowd.

I just don't get the point of limiting to a size that is pretty much what we'll end up using eventually with no limitation, apart from the potential of further expansion if we get more users or more megalomaniac. Plus people on our server are rather civilized. It is not like some idiot goes walking straight ahead for 10 kilometers just to overload the server...

Hmm... it looks like the PA minecraft guys have a lot of pretty neat ideas. They generate a map, take a map picture of it then post it so people can lay claims without having to necessarily build in game. From the way things have been going with us, that's more structure than we need, but... I like seeing how other people do things sometimes.

Spoiler: massive map picture (click to show/hide)

Edit: oh also, if we were going to use something to change how the map generates like people were talking about, we'd probably need to limit the size because from when I know the newly generated stuff would just use the normal world-gen rules.

Edit2: Looks like that claims map was largely because of server instability so that people could claim even though some couldn't get on.

Need I point out the southern loop.

How much overhead does it really add if no one's walking there nor building?  ???
