I am personally in favor of a new map. I seem to have lost my projects and all my stored goods (including secondary sites), so there is literally nothing to keep me tied to the current map. I'm pretty seriously bummed about all this. I logged in this morning to work on my tower only to discover that my island had returned to the exact state I first found it in.

You need to try and gen a Skykands type map. Why? Well, why the hell not?

Speaking of Skylands, I still can't extract the damn .zip file for it...

Why not?
Because that's impossible, maybe?

They used a map editor to make that map.

My underwater glass dome was made without cuboid back in the old map.

It was a real pain to clean the inside and then drain all the water.

Suggestion for the maps page:

Use this: http://iipimage.sourceforge.net/

That way people won't be pulling the whole massive image down to look at one section of the map anymore. That would save a lot of proc. and bandwidth.

Suggestion for next map: BiomeTerrain Mod. Remember the kickass map generators for Creative? Even more rocking here. Granted it would need to generate a map with a few flat areas so people have places to build, but the floating continents to make caves would be great.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I support a new map if we can use that to make it.

So my crundles are staying intact unless they're newly spawned... until they are exposed to anything that isn't at room temperature.  This mostly seems to mean blood, specifically, their own.  Then they go poof very quickly.

I support a new map, i lost interest in my project because of how much time it sucked up. I just don't want a really crazy map where there's barely any room to build.

BiomeTerrain is pretty awesome, but sadly it only works in singleplayer. There's another mod for SMP that's almost as good and seems to be more consistent about the subterranean worlds it generates though it has fewer features. Even if you don't generate a new world it would be a good idea to try it for any chunks that are generated for the current one, so we can have swamps, naturally occurring hell stones and underground lakes.

Did some definitive packet capturing on minecraft...

I recorded these by actively performing each task for a minute, then taking the average per second.

These are given in kilobytes, not kilobits.
Login: 219kb
idle: 1.79kb/sec
actively teleporting around the map: 46.77kb/sec
actively digging out a small section of ground: 5.43kb/sec
Actively building: 1.84kb/sec

So as you can see, most actions in minecraft use really a tiny amount of bandwidth. The real burden comes from teleporting around a lot. This burden is on both the server bandwidth and server CPU. I think putting a rate limit on teleportation for everyone but ops might be a good idea.

I think also adding something that kicks idle players would be good, as having a single idle player on the server for 24 hours adds up to 155 mb! What a waste!

I may do more testing tomorrow if I feel like it.

...The soulsphere was not a true sphere; it was a set of intersecting circles. That isn't too difficult.

...If these tools allow us to create grander structures of greater beauty and charm, then I say let us have these tools.

A sphere can be defined as a set of intersecting circles.  Just sayin'
(Edit: Wait... I see what you mean.  You're right, the soulsphere was literally three intersecting circles.  Nevermind.)

I think you've convinced me that cuboid is a valuable tool... I still think we should be moderate in the way we use it.  I guess the difficult part here is how each of us defines "moderate".

I actually just looked into the bandwidth arrangements for my colo and I see that they've changed me to 95th percentile billing instead of total monthly transfer. Hmm.... Muhahaha!

Hrm, the server is giving me problems as I can't connect (keeps timing out), but eh, it's kind of late anyways.

Hm... I like different trees from Terrain Tweaker... Also, increasing the biome sizes would be nice. The default size just isn't big enough.
