I found these on the something awful forums.

They are not made by me but by a someone named Randie. So give him credit.

What you did is referred to as hotlinking.  This is at the very least considered rude and at worst considered outright bandwidth theft and copyright infringement.

Please either link them as links (not images) or upload a copy of them to your own host or imageshack.us ... rehosting images that are made by someone else (and the same goes for hotlinking) is a violation of U.S. copyright laws... if the person who wrote those saw this they could legally force Toady's ISP (whoever is hosting this forum and site) to take it down forcibly, and sue you for copyright infringement  I'm sure you don't want that...

I don't agree with US copyright law, and think it's totally stupid, but I figured you would want to know what damage hotlinking can do...

She'd actually have a very hard time succesfully suing. And an even harder time obtaining damages were she to do so. Plus, I really doubt Randie cares that much. It certainly would be both right and polite to rehost/link to the images though.

Oh.  Your.  God.

That is hi-larious.

And it got me a rather odd look since I burst out laughing while at work.  You would think there'd be something lost in the humor department going from the text of DF to art, but Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo-stick...  Grade A comedy.

Actually, that's not true at all.
Bandwidth 'theft' is not illegal under the terms of any US law.

Furthermore, US law and the DMCA clearly state that ANY material which is posted by the creator to a public median not under their own domain, including but not limited to Public Forums, Mass Distribution Projects, Charities, Public Galleries, Graffiti and Road Art, Mass Distributed Mailers, (etc. etc. for some time) or any other publicly viewable area which is not membership or pay restricted, forfeits their rights to control of distribution of the material in it's original state, so long as it is not sold or redistributed for the intent of profit or taking credit of.

Meaning, if you post it to the public, the public can repost it.

Exceptions include only pay sites, private newsgroups, and private galleries.

SA is considered a public forum.

Dude..Chil. It's considered impolite because you are sucking up other peoples bandwith. An easy way to get around that is to just save the file and upload it to imageshack or something.

It's kind of like redirecting traffic flow from your frontyard to the highway.

Here's a couple Wacom/Painter images I made for SA threads:

One of the first few frontiersmen who established Peacefulpaddled, valiantly defending the colony from a werewolf attack.

Sankis, the retired ruler of the fabled lost fortress of Boatmurdered. After going insane, he lit himself on fire, and went on a rampage, eventually murdering another dwarf with his bare hands, as both were consumed by the flames. This event started the downfall of the outpost.

Haha, awesome, Locus.  I followed a good deal of the tale of Boatmurdered.  Somehow I missed that picture of Sankis, oh the memories!  Everyone knew that fortress was doomed from the beginning, especially with all the political craziness going on.

Sorry to resurrect the ancient thread but this really seemed like the best place to put this. Just my little tribute to the wonderful game, nothing fancy here, just a stencil of a graphic from the intro movie. It's a really awful photo, there were paint malfunctions, and I could have done with a better piece of MDF to start with: But I've made worse.
