Job cancellation issue
« on: October 18, 2010, 09:27:17 am »

I'm getting a large amount of "Urist McHauler cancels Store Item in Stockpile:  Item inaccessible"

When I go into the announcements and hit z to zoom to location, it zooms to the dwarf, not the item.  I went looking around and found some stone sitting on top of trees and some refuse bits that must've gone flying during battles that were sitting on top of the inaccessible fort walls, so I forbid all them.  I'm still getting the messages though, so there must be something else.  Any way to check what item(s) they are trying to access?

Check in water.  If you have water that is fluctuating between 3/7 and 4/7 and there is something the dwarves want to haul in that area, every time the 3/7 tiles line up to allow a path a dwarf with decide to pick up the object, then as soon as a 4/7 or higher covers the spot will cancel the task causing that message.  This is the most common cause of these messages for me.

Good thought, though to no avail.   There's no water thats not 7/7 anywhere.  Now I'm also getting "cancels Clean Self:  Area Inaccessible".

Where would dwarves want to clean themselves at?  I have a designated water source on the surface, very easy to get to.  I've blocked off any caverns I've broken into and none of the water there is designated as a water source, so I don't understand?

Do you have soap?

Dwarves are stupid, and will go grab soap to clean themselves, then they get confused because they don't know how to use it to clean themselves, and will cause this spam.

Yep, made some for the hospital.  I've just forbid it all, thanks.

Or build enough coffers in the hospital for your dwarves to put all the soap away. Out of sight, out of mind!

Did you fix this already for yourself?
I just designated some burrows like safe world (for any dwarf not having to go outside to stay in) and mining exploration so my workers don't get caught in a fight with some HFS. But this has caused me a lot of 'item inaccessible' spam...
I can't understand this because if an item is outside of the accessible burrows a dwarf just shouldn't pick the job, right? So is this a bug?

Also to help you in your troubleshooting I just figured something out which might be usefull. (j) gives you the joblist for your fortress. You can view all jobs here and it will state the item involved. Now go to your stocks screen and look for the item that causes the job. From here you can zoom in on any item as long as your bookkeeper is doing his job most excellent. evaluate if there is a problem and go on checking the next job.
Tedious but hey this is dwarf fortress... I believe there is nothing that doesn't take at least an hour to figure out.

Gully, yes, I fixed the soap issue.  The other item cancellation issue "fixed itself"...either I finally forbid it without knowing or it became accessible.  I did not know about the 'j' menu to check individual items, thanks!  I'll be using that if it ever comes up again.
