See if it's possible to assimilate the unknown.

Not to say it's impossible but you have no defenses / weapons save for a really small shield and a mining laser and arm. It would be very dangerous if the unknown is a hostile

SCAN THAT PLANET!!!

One problem with that idea, only devices for that is radar and a basic camera.

Any other ideas?

Unless our Sensors use radio-waves, it is not radar, and scanning is a very broad verb that would even fit radar detection...

Scan (for) the unknown.  Let's figure out what it is, first.

We'll worry about the planet later.

I did indeed mean the sensors consist of just a radio wave dish for radar for now. Unfortunately Radar Does not give very much data. At the very best I suppose it could give topographic data but I assumed you meant more than that. However, the planet is out of range as the equipment is only accurate up to 1000km. If you are satisfied with that no problem. I would suggest trying to find better equipment first however. If you disagree with my assumptions on the limited quality of radar please private message me. I am no expert at radar applications :)

This page suggests that radar is very useful in orbit, but I don't see much about very long range. A telescope is better for that. Can we grind mirrors? there's got to be silicon around here somewhere.

Creativity is always encouraged and rewarded. If you can figure out how to do so with your current equipment great. If not find better equipment to do so. Update coming later tonight.

Thank you for the link it was informative.

How large are we exactly?  I mean, if we can carry 600m3 of materials......I can't wrap my head around how big that is.

10*10¨6 meters, something like a 3 storey-house.

But we don't have any manufacturing ability,do we? We're the lamest Von Neumann probe ever...

What is the range of the mining laser? is it operable as a weapon? can the *Unknown* material in the hold be used as fuel for the fission reactor? what are all these *Unknown*'s? tune in next time on: "You are von Neumann Probe!"

This is accurate. Become less lame!

Well, who needs to explore? Enough caution about the unknowns. Start building a smelter and get to work on a manufacturing facility. We can attach it to ourselves in due time.

Looking awesome so far, colonizer droid is not dead yet though! I'm planning on revamping the rules a bit though, more fun less number crunching.

Maneuver! Drifted towards UNKNOWN! [53km away]

Energy!
+5GJ from Solar Arrays,
+5GJ from Micro Nuclear Reactor (LOW FUEL WARNING!)
Net: +10GJ [0 Lost to Overcharge!]

... [Next Turn]

Maneuver! Activated thrusters to prevent colliding with *UNKNOWN!* Upon arrival you find that *UNKNOWN* appears to be some sort of metallic structure! It is six times bigger than you.
Initial observation determines function to be that of a sensor cluster.

Would love to, but are you proposing building a smelter out of rock (or ore), with a single mechanical hand to do so? I wish this Probe was as cool as a Dwarf...

What is the range of the mining laser? is it operable as a weapon? can the *Unknown* material in the hold be used as fuel for the fission reactor? what are all these *Unknown*'s? tune in next time on: "You are von Neumann Probe!"

Range of the mining laser is 25km, it is operable as a weapon, but you are uncertain as to how it may react to shielding.
The *unknown* material likely cannot be used as fuel, but you are uncertain.

Looking awesome so far, colonizer droid is not dead yet though! I'm planning on revamping the rules a bit though, more fun less number crunching.

Very cool! :D
