Help request: Deciding on a bridge to use
« on: October 17, 2010, 06:59:55 pm »

Working on a pretty involved megaproject, looking for some community input.  Which one do you like more?

Purely aesthetic reasons is what I'm looking for.  Each "bridge" does the same thing...it spans a 2x7 area.  There will be water underneath it.  Don't take the need to go up a z-level too much into account, it's an outdoor style river/bridge area.  The bridge will not be retracted or drawbridge style, so don't take that into account either.

Top one, but make the floor/bridge out of glass so you can see the water flowing beneath

Middle one, and I second the glass. Also: lined with statues on each side. Gold statues.

I vote for the top one, with pillars topped by platinum/aluminum statues placed next to the wall segments but with 1-tile gap between them.

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Most readers expect this thread to be about which version of Dwarf Fortress they prefer. Probably. At least I did.

On topic: I like the top (right) one best. If you said "bridge", that one best approaches the mental image I would get.

Top one. Preferably out of a realistic stone (I'd say granite and marble are the best, chalk and gypsum the worst realism-wise).

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

The top right one! Seconded or Thirded the statues, atleast by either end on both sides. I thought the title was about which DF version also.

Urist McMiner Unearths a strange pad. He trembles as he inspects it's time saving features. Knowing no 1 dwarf must posess this power, he quietly drops it into the nearest chasm and never speaks of it again.DwarfPad

There is nothing unrealistic about building from chalk.  Maybe you are thinking about the chalk used on your school blackboard, but naturally occurring chalk stone is a bit harder, and has been used throughout history to build many stone structures, from bridges to castles.

Middle one made of glass. Otherwise the top one.
