Can they only be trained into war versions or can you have hunting giant eagles?

Well, I remember reading about how the hunting animals are slightly faster [but do less damage] then the war versions.  One embark I had a bunch of war dogs that stayed and guarded the wagon and early outside stockpiles.  Kobold thieves would come, get detected the second they came across a dog, and would go fleeing for their lives.  The war dogs would actually have a lot of trouble catching up to them before they hit the map edge but if they did catch the kobold....

So I was thinking, use a mix of war dogs and hunting dogs so the faster dogs can run down those quick ones.

Then I thought.... instead of a hunting dog, why not have a horde of hunting giant eagles running their asses down?  I got what I need to start breeding the eagles :D

I have both kinds of eagles.  Unfortunately they just follow the trainer around unless I chain them up which makes them useless for guard duty like I had intended.

What do pets and trained animals do when there's no path to their target dwarf?

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Yes. If it breeds before becoming a war animal, it breeds after becoming a war animal.

Do war dogs breed?

I read that and immediately thought of the "Does it blend" youtube videos...

The new DF version, "Does it breed?"
