Your favorite type of weapon trap
« on: October 17, 2010, 04:02:31 pm »

I'm looking for ideas...Just say which is your favorite and why ;)

I generally like spears, because they don't get stuck often and they can cause major bleeding and such so that when the enemy is close enough to attack you, they're all dead...or dying...or in a cage trap ;) .

And I can just mass produce them as I can use them as weapons for my squads as well.

Spinning Serrated Discs.

One trap with 10 of these will cause up to 30 dismemberments per step! Watching that many chunks fly is entertaining like nothing else.

From front to back:
3 rows of large steel/cotton candy/ serrated disks, then two of silver hammers, and then, when I get enough,  a row of whips.

Spiked silver balls.  3 per trap.   I was under the mistaken impression that these did blunt damage, but they seem to work pretty well anyways.  I'm not looking for kills, just crippling injuries so my military can ride out and get some glory.  Mauls and warhammers also see a fair bit of use.

Large, serrated steel disc x10 all the way.  It gives me an excuse to do my best Treguard impression every time I release a captured siege from their shared cage into the veritable minefield of weapon traps I set up between that and the exit.  "Oooooooooooh, nasty."

The solution to that is obviously more serrated discs.

Depends on the fort, really.

If it's one where Goblins are a prevalent menace, Goblinite traps are always fun.
If FBs are the primary problem, I typically go with "drop it into a pit" or "hit it with a landslide" traps.

However, these are all trumped by Magma defense systems in any way, shape, or form.

I dunno, the good ol' Dwarven landmine is unbelievably classy--and deadly. Magma is overrated, crushing something beneath rock and sending that something's comerades flying is incredibly dwarfy.

Sort of depends.

Serrated discs are always nice, but I like building my traps in one-tile wide bottlenecks above deep pits, so for those traps I tend to use whatever goblinite I can find as well as blunt weapons.

The assorted goblinite is nice for producing dodges which lead straight to a 7 z fall, and the blunt damage can sometimes launch them straight to the pit.

Pits excluded, I tend to go with serrated discs or sets of matching goblinite.

I'm making a sort of combination trap.  It's a fairly long hallway, single tile with a 1-z drop into magma on either side (and the only way to get out is a stair at the beginning) and weapon traps all along it with some throwaway glass and goblinite weapons.  Unfortunately, the only place I could really put it without creating a logistical nightmare went over some storage, so for that part it has a collapsable ceiling.

Serrated discs DO get stuck easily, but spears actually get stuck the most. I still prefer the serrated discs though, for the same reason everyone else does: it's like a goblin blender. Hammer traps are fun too, though, as they don't create much of a mess. Well, until the goblins start vomiting, that is...

Wooden training axes, to send the goblinite to the magma smelters and garbage dumps by express delivery.

I'm a fan of the giant axe blade myself, if only because of bad memories from the Crash Bandicoot days.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.
