That sounds about right from some of the sieges I've fought off recently.

Pick off the token force they tend to send the first time and they get angry.

The first time I held of a siege, I lost half my military.

Then the next one was about half the size of my fortress, all on war mounts.

Now I always have a full time military.

Yea ive had a few large ones lately as well, and as long as none of those war animals are jabberers  you'll be fine.

Seriously tho, those things scare me

Sieges can get pretty big, especially if you have a lot of wealth.  I built up 37 million in my last fort, and the last siege I saw there sent about 100 combined Goblins and Trolls.  They really wanted all that wealth I generated, I guess.  Sadly for them, they just got a lot of cage trappings and their survivors picked off by a squad of Dwarves equipped with ludicrously valuable weapons and armor.

All dwarves do that, and anything else with [LIKES_FIGHTING] in their creature info.

Great way to cheer up sad military dwarves is having them fight stuff like crazy. Animals, cave people, sieges, whatever.

That tends to be part of why after surviving a tantrum spiral at least half of the ones that made it to "doesn't really care about anything anymore", they get tons of happy thoughts from the fights to counteract the normally dwarf-mind breaking tragedy of losing yet another cat or drinking the same booze three times in a row.

yeah, the siege's 2nd squad leader got diced and I beat the siege

20 goblins, two leaders . . . therefore two squads total?  Yeah, if it weren't for the animals, I'd say this was "small," not "huge."  You'll see ambushes that are four squads or so.  I needed to have something like eight squads in a siege before enough of them survived my weapon traps that they would get inside the fort; and even then, I was being nice to them so my own squads would get practice.

The last siege I had consisted of two squads of goblin archers, two squads of goblin pikemen and macemen, a squad of trolls, and a final large squad of various mounted goblins led by a demon

never had to melt so much goblinite and atomsmash so many corpses and clothing

Ya, that is fairly small for a siege. They can be really FPS-crushingly big (like 100+ baddies).

Anyone else notice that this thread title's acronym is HFS?
