Pandemic!
« on: October 17, 2010, 03:04:51 pm »

So, my fortress recently fought off a foe with a particularly nasty bite attack which apparently causes unconsciousness followed by paralysis (and therefore much Fun).  Surprisingly, only three dwarfs were apparently afflicted during the attack - two died shortly afterwards, while the third apparently managed to fight off the illness and is now sitting in the hospital with a broken leg.

Nothing out of the ordinary thus far, right?

Well, shortly after a dwarf who attempts to give this survivor water suddenly falls unconscious, and subsequently himself is paralysed and dies.

The next dwarf who tries the same manages to stumble out of the hospital and over to the nearby workshops before the fatal affliction takes hold... and, suddenly, a nearby dwarf collapses as well!

It looks like I have a pandemic on my hands, and it's spreading - slowly but surely.

(The fact that I had a goblin siege show up just as this was getting started didn't help matters, but, fortunately, they are no longer a concern.)

EDIT: I just spotted this thread, which is eerily familiar.  I still think this is awesome.

It sounds like your injured dwarf needs to have an unfortunate accident happen to him.  ;)

Oh, he's long since dead.

The disease isn't, though.

Are you sure it was the bite that was poisonous(like, an injected venom)? It might have been its blood, which got onto its victims, and then got spread around.

Well, it was advertised as a poisonous bite, leading me to believe that it was supposed to be an injected venom.

Closer inspection reveals a frozen extract coating on many (all?) of those afflicted, however.

If I understand the wiki right, and I probably don't, venom attacks can use the creature's blood material as a toxin(if the blood material itself is toxic).

Quarantine the infected, then apply magma.

This fortress is turning into some kind of supervillain lair or something.

This is why every fort needs a bunker for those truly needed dwarves and a magma bath cleansing routine.

This is too horrifyingly Fun to watch for me to want to do anything to clean up (with the exception of seeing all too much spam of "Urist McVictim cancels Rest: Paralyzed", which, although I can easily turn off cancellation notices, still kills my FPS - or at least drops it below its already rather low mark).

Apparently, the wells are poisoned now too.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Surprisingly, despite the fort's population being halved, nobody has tantrumed yet.

EDIT: Two interesting notes:

1) As evidenced by patient zero, some dwarfs have sufficiently strong immune systems to shake off the effects, which leads to...

2) The same patient can, assuming they manage to fight off the disease, be re-infected.  Since most of the wells are close to the hospital, this can lead to some dwarfs wandering back and forth between the well and the bed.

Hmmm that's not good since a dwarf that fought off the infection/sickness/plague. Should become immune to it (well not the infection just the sickness).

Did that cause tantrum spiral for you yet?

Sounds like you're running your own version of Project Blue.  Just keep an eye out for Flagg...

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

You need some kind of infection control system; simplest option is probably a small pit in the entrance tunnel with ramps at both ends, filled to 3/7 or so with water, and with some means of dumping the effluent out somewhere safe.

Mind you, it shouldn't be beyond a typical DF player's ingenuity to weaponise a toxic waste lagoon.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

If you dumped goblins or nobles into toxic water, would they start to rot?

This.  I now envision a moat coated with the aforementioned frozen extract.

Mega bonus points to those who figure out how to do this reliably.

EDIT: I am now being sieged again.  Let's find out if I still have enough dwarfpower to last.  (Considering that the only dwarfs I lost to the last several are those who walked up the stairs, saw enemies, and charged blindly, I'd say the odds are fairly good.)

Apparently, the wells are poisoned now too.  Actually, there's just extract on - or around - the tiles the dwarf would use to access them, but that's beside the point.

The extract is on the ground specifically because those are the places to access the well.  The dwarves are washing themselves, which should help save them.  Now, you just to clean up the extract on the ground, and deal with the rest of the sources before there are new contaminations, and you're on the road to recovery.

Aside from the siege.
