Mystery super-sword
« on: October 17, 2010, 02:11:26 pm »

In a relatively new fortress (about one year in) I go to the Stocks screen to find where the fortress axe is, since nobody seems to be chopping wood.

We have two picks... an axe... and a TWO-HANDED ADAMANTINE SWORD. 157 levels below ground, in an entirely unrevealed area of the map. It's marked blue on the stocks screen, the way merchant's gear and such is marked blue, and obviously I can't actually see the sword itself.

I know trying to mine it out would be a terrible mistake, but this sword... it calls to me...

[I assume this is an HFS-related bug? I definitely shouldn't be able to see that]

it's more FUN that way.

you are correct in that you should not be able to see it, it's the same old bug that lets you see GCS webs and such before you reveal them.

Anyway, you might as well dig straight for it now that you know it's there. It's probably pretty valuable and you might even be able to get one of your dorfs to use it! What's the worst that could happen?

Seriously, that sword will easily be the crown jewel of your fort, go get it as soon as you can. It's very suprising how easy Toady made to get at it, but I suppose that'll be fixed in a future update. You might need, at most, two or three soliders. Don't worry, it's a piece of cake.

What are the odds on finding them anyway? I only managed to ever 'find' one, and that was because the parameters and site had been told about. I can never find them in my own worlds :(

(I'm aware it's a trap - I plan on backing up a save before sinking the staircase)

savescum BEFORE you start digging the stairs just in case you're one of the unfortunate people who get huge FPS dings from having too many stairs on their map.

Change title to "Cotton Candy" or "Blue" please.

Other than that, what you uncovered is a "Demon Fortress."  The wiki doesn't give much more info than what you just said, but from what I understand there is one on every 16x16 of possible embarks, so if you were to make a 16x16 embark map and then find it, then to make another fortress with a normal embark square in the place where you found it it would still be there.

There's one in every "Regional Map" tile, which is 16x16 "Local Map" tiles.

with a 2x2 you've got a 1 in 64 chance, 3x3 is about 1 in 28.5, 4x4 = 1 in 16.

If you absolutely need to find one, Embark on the whole Local Map area, figure out about where it is, savescum(to save cavern mud, if you just reclaim you lose it all), then re-embark around where it was at.

Takes a bit, but it's a lot faster than going around making 2x2s over and over hoping for one or something.
