Dump Pit Death
« on: October 17, 2010, 11:48:28 am »

I dug out a dumping pit that was only about 4 z-levels down.  On the side of the pit were up/down stairs for the miners to do their work.  I have been using the pit to clear out stone for storerooms as soon as I got 1 zlevel dug.

A short while later, miasma started billowing into my fortress.  I'm thinking, 'oh great they are dumping refuse in there' (i already declared a refuse pile outside).  But when I looked on the bottom Z level, there was a dead miner down there.

I'm not sure what happened, but I'm guessing someone dropped stones down and it crushed him?

Also, I built a burial receptacle, but no one took his body up the stairs and put him in it?

Sorry, I'm still kind of a nooblet.

I have no ideas regarding the miner without seeing the pit, but coffins have to be designated for burial after being built through the 'q' menu. It should be pretty self-explanatory from there.

I tried to assign the coffin to the dead miner, but the only people that showed up that I could assign to were only dorfs that were currently alive?  Is this right?

The miner was probably blown into the pit by a cave-in. Alternatively, he was melancholic/stark raving mad and used the pit to commit suicide.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

As far as I know, there is no way to assign a coffin to a dwarf that is already dead. You instead have to designate it for (b)urial and allow citizens to be buried in it, and a dwarf will gather as many parts of a random dead citizen to place in it. There's no way to choose which corpse is chosen unless you forbid all of the corpses but the one you want buried. Alternatively, assign a coffin to each dwarf before an industrial accident kills them, and hope that the accident is of a kind that leaves their body free for recovery.

Although that may change soon: Toady recently wrote something about alternate methods of remembering the dead being available, so maybe there will be urns or statues available for dwarves who drown in magma. Based on other things he wrote, this may be important knowledge in the next update.

When you make these into rooms you are saying "this is your special burial room." Upon death remains automatically go there. By marking it for burial you are saying "next corpse goes here" and simply provides space post humorously. You can also bury pets in this manner.

Dropping stones/items won't kill a dwarf.  Maybe he got stuck down there and died of thirst?  Or he died somewhere else and you have your orders set to dump all dead bodies...
