I'm all for skeleton/zombie dragons if they're already dead/full grown, but if we make our future familiar undead immediately then it won't grow, so we'd be stuck with a tiny stack of useless.

Quite, if it is like a necrotic dragon or something, it can be quite dead and still grow.

Actually I think that it  means that it would be a death dragon and suck the life out of  people, giving them negative levels (Of Life!) and turning them into wights....

You decide to practice necromancy and time magic. You never did time magic, so you don't have the hour glass for it or the clocks, but you did do necromancy a little for parties. The skulls in the drink bowl chattering like that... you even have a book! but no corpses. You could do some other stuff like pain casting and deathly poison in the forest, but the question still raises about the time magic. You decide to practice your necromancy in the forest with the egg in your satchel and hold the the necromancy book. You search around the forest for animals, but only find a badger corpse. You check the spine and skull for trauma... and there isn't any! Reanimation will go on!

RITUAIZE!
This. Use it to find out how you can preform time magics without special equipment.

Ritualize. Once done see if it's smart enough to make simple tools. If it is then have it make an hourglass.

You move you desk to the corner of the room in your hut. You place the badger corpse in the center of the circle you drew in white chalk. You grab a divining rod (they are typed after the first use, so use them wisely!) and charge it with necromantic energy.  You zap the badger corpse while reading the smaller animation spell, and, with a little effort, the badger comes to life and is ready to serve. It smells really bad, so you throw it outside, the badge not caring due to lack of feeling and service bond. You close the door and move your desk back, and take your encyclopedia of magic out. You read the article on time magic, and it says you HAVE to start with equipment to make something portable. IT also says you could probably substitute a smaller time device until you get an hour-glass or worthy time-piece.

It's a zombie, it barely has the intelligence to move. If you deal with the undead, they tend to be really, really, stupid.

Why can't we just use necromancy to pickle the body with magic?
Also why wouldn't we make our zombies intelligent enough to make things?

A) We aren't that good with necromancy
B) It's a badger, the brain has lost any usefulness long before we found it, and point a still applies.

This is why I didn't want to get necromancy immediately. We're stuck with a useless badger corpse that can move, and down a magic tool that could be used for something else.

Make one of the divining rods be for lightning. Save one rod for time magic.

Is it possible to charge a rod with time without equipment? If not, go outside, clear a space, make a sundial, and charge the rod with time.
