Is this normal..?
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:48:29 am »

I was playing DF with Suika fortress mod(not sure if it matters), and i'm pretty amazed by what's happened. In the middle of summer, before I could get my farms up(because I do everything backwards), A whole bunch of 'Mountain Gnomes'(might be specific to the mod)Guzzled ALL OF MY BOOZE before my military(3 dwarfs[suikas] who had just arrived and had no training whatsoever) completely killed every gnome. I had been digging into the caverns, and had breached many, but, not daring to adventure inside(I've never actually gotten very far, either I get bored because I never get any migrants or my forts are destroyed, so I've never actually made a military force), I just kept digging deeper. About the start of autumn, a migrant arrived and IMMEDIATELY HAD A FEY MOOD. Plus, he was a gem cutter, so he required a jewelers, which I hadn't built yet. I built him his shop, he grabbed some gems from the quantom stockpile of probably 300 stone +50 gems(i think he grabbed 3)And immediately started work. WHILE he did that, I found the Magma Sea! message. And you know what else? THAT'S RIGHT. YOU KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING. THE WONDERFUL COTTON  CANDY was found. All of this happened BEFORE THE FALL TRADE CARAVAN CAME. I HADN'T EVEN SET UP THE ROOMS YET. It shocked and surprised me so much that I don't know what to do. I don't consider myself a newbie, but I'm no expert.

tl;dr - STUFF HAPPENED.

{btw, I can post pictures if you want)

EDIT: btw, the artifact made was a chalcedony coffer.

Gnomes I think come in vanilla and guzzle your booze.

Edit:

Alright, after some thinking here's what you should do.

Practice your emergency response handling skills and get more booze fast.
Dig out your rooms, continue your fort as usual.
Use this fort as an opportunity to practice handling a military.
When you get bored of the fort and want to move on, THEN mine out the good stuff at the bottom.

Yeah, this is pretty normal. Sometimes the game moves at a very fast pace. A lot of it, like artifact moods, has an element of randomness to it that has been studied in detail over on the wiki, if you are interested.

The gnomes guzzling alcohol is also normal, and they aren't the only creature that does so. Bears, for instance, can be baited into traps with tiny alcohol stockpiles.

And as for the discovery of magma and adamantine, that too is fairly normal. Hell, if you discover the magma, four times out of five you'll discover a vein of adamantine along with it.

All this means is that you have an intense number of directions to work in, and a really nice chest for a noble or completely swank hospital!

Moods can happen once you've got 20 dwarves and have done some stuff like dig this many squares out, make this much junk. They run on a rather random timer once their conditions are met so if, say, that dwarf was your 34th dwarf, then it wasn't quite so much "immediately" as it was "the mood chooser went off right after he entered the map and happened to choose him."
