Wishful thinking
« on: October 16, 2010, 08:47:56 pm »

I know there is a map with a single 100 z-level cavern on DFFD, but has anyone got a map with no caverns at all, just going straight to the magma sea?

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

You wouldn't want that, trust me.  If you have a world with no caves at all, then your civilization has no underground plants at all.  Meaning you cannot embark with any alcohol, plump helmets, or seeds.

not no caverns period, just an embark site without a cavern. The worldgen sometimes places dwarf civs on places with no caverns.

I'm using a modified large region with the caverns only a few z-levels below, and the magma sea a tad bit lower that the caverns.

You might be able to pull something like that off with worldgen parameters. Set CAVERN_LAYER_OPENLESS_MAX to something terribly low, like, say, 5, and CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY to something low or 0 as well. Then, set CAVERN_LAYER_NUMBER to 1. You should, then, have caverns on every embark, but they'll be so small and thin that you're reasonably unlikely to actually hit them. Not 100% certain, and it might make it so that your dwarf civs don't have underground plants anyway, but it could be worth trying on a pocket world or somesuch.

I want to do this and have a really low depth to the great magma sea, for the purpose of FUN. And getting rid of elves. But mostly FUN.

By "really low depth," do you mean that you want the magma sea far below the surface? You could just play with the LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_4 (or 1) to have more z-levels between the last cavern and the magma sea (or the surface and the first cavern) along with the minimal-size cavern parameters I mentioned before. The underground parameters are there for a reason, after all  :P

Like, I want to have the magma sea as close as possible to the surface, with the whole map ridiculously small.

I'm fed up with these fractal caverns.

The "fractal caverns" thing is terribly annoying, and is caused by the CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY parameter. I almost always set its min and max both to 0 so my caverns are actually, you know, cavernous instead of being ugly mazes of twisty passages, all alike.

That said, you should be able to get a shallow magma sea by just setting the LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER parameters to their minimum, setting the number of caverns low/nullifying it, and making caverns' openness be low. Then just embark on a small map and you should be mostly set... Depending on what other things you want present, of course.

*facepalm* I just noticed that the worldgen settings has a cavern number setting. Woot disableable caverns.

You wouldn't want that, trust me.  If you have a world with no caves at all, then your civilization has no underground plants at all.  Meaning you cannot embark with any alcohol, plump helmets, or seeds.

EDIT: Wrong quote.

no, add the aboveground farming tag to their entry in entity_default, and you can start with aboveground crops.
also, you could reduce the cavern layers to 1 and make them very, very small, but with guaranteed water.
