Well, then you will have to hit some keys...

Thanks for the tip, though.  I didn't actually know about that one.

Tried that just now, nothing happened, just as I suspected.

It's an option in the preferences.  Advanced -> General -> Search for text when I start typing.

Then its probably either:
Not turned on by default
Or I turned if off because I dislike it.

I can't figure out what keystroke it's hitting on to go back in the history: sometimes I'll start typing in a text field, and it'll go back as if I hit Backspace or Alt-leftarrow, despite the fact that I've hit neither. At first I thought it was backspace because I type that key a lot, but sometimes it does it just from starting to type. Maybe it's shift+ one of the letters, given that it seems to happen right at the beginning of typing.

Alternatively, I could just be missing the fact that I have hit Backspace, since it's practically a reflex by now. I'm serious, I am incapable of using certain alternative keyboard layouts because they have \ where the left half of the backspace key is, and therefore my text looks like tihs\\\his\\\\\\.

This is a fox skull helmet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of fox bone and is encircled with bands of fox leather. This item is haunted by the ghost of Alfador Angrorung the fox.

It's probably backspace.  I had that issue once too.
