Slight change to "graveyard" stockpile
« on: October 16, 2010, 02:20:26 pm »

Instead of acting like a refuse stockpile for corpses, a graveyard should act like a temporary storage for the dead to await their definitive burial. It would work much like the animal stockpile. Coffins and caskets are stored there. If a corpse arrives, it's put into a coffin, that you can place somewhere later (like a cage with a creature in it). If a corpse arrives in pieces, they're put in the same correct coffin. If there is a lack of corpse containers it can still revert to the way it is now, putting the corpses on the ground. Corpses in coffins should give a smaller happiness penalty than corpses lying on the ground, but full relief naturally only comes with proper burial.

The only reason any dwarf or pet would end up in a graveyard in my fort is that I don't have enough coffins. I wouldn't mind seeing graveyards have to be designated on tiles that have not been mined under though.

There are provisions in the code for burying stuff, so that's still another way to treat the dead that will be possible in the future. What I had in mind with this is to let the graveyard play its actual role as a temporary burial ground for when you can't or don't want to place coffins definitively yet.

How about a Burial Site (much like graveyard, in fact, replace it) where body+ coffin is placed so I can just go to my abandoned mines, highlight the whole damn mess and mark it as burial and those dorfs can go grab bodies, a casket and pack em in like sardines.

Heh, this is basically what I do.  I would also like it if you could designate a body to be cremated in magma, which would have the same effect as putting it in a coffin.

I think a better name for the stockpile, based on how it works, would be "morgue". Then there could be an actual graveyard as well, which IMHO would make more sense as an activity zone. Perhaps dwarves would consider this type of burial undwarvenly and would get a bad thought from having loved ones interred this way, but not as bad as if they were just left to rot.

There could also be a crematorium (magma powered or otherwise)...
