I don't think it is possibly to build in DF2010, with the way sizes and setting the weight limits on pressure plates has changed.

I like to approach things with a certain "mix" of insane vs. not insane.  I have artifacts turned off so I don't have to deal with moods and the more gruesome problems they generate [also because I'm trying to build a fort with a 15 pop cap and I don't want to lose critical skilled labor].

I admit, I do slaughter cats and kittens [except for one if I'm forced to have one] but that can fit under self-defense because of the problems and fortress destroying powers they inadvertantly wield.  In real life I had two cats that died of old age and I loved them quite a bit [they were also fixed].

Merman farming excites me not because I have any real interest in forming such a gruesome industry [not my thing] but because such an engineering feat is possible to be designed and implemented.

I do believe in OSHA and try not to lose dwarves even if it is by their own stupidity.  I micromanage intensive channeling projects, place the impassable tiles of magma workshops over the magma pits, designate restricted traffic areas over frozen ponds for the spring thaw...

I don't use the hunting skill a whole lot.  Just bajillions of cage traps out in the wild between ponds and stuff as choke points.  Then I use a kennel for training, then a butcher shop...

When I do not have the pop cap in place I usually establish far more food/drink then I know I'll need just in case I get those two seasons of 20+ immigrant waves.  I try to put everyone to work.  No matter what's going on in the fortress during peacetime, there's always something that needs to be moved somewhere else.  And if there isn't, I can fix that very very quickly.

That being said....

I don't go out of my way to spoil them unless there's one I like.

I DO have cruelty potential.  Like wanting to feed a bunch of unarmed elven women to a tentacle demon.  Or let's say a noble orders the death of one of my favorite dwarves.  I WILL have his sorry ass executed in return.  I have set brush fires just to see what would happen.  I will sometimes perpetrate mass deforestation.  I am willing to export lead, cinnibar, and pitchblende childrens' toys to the elves.  I do enjoy seeing an enemy gib into peices.  And, I am working on my arena so I can do other "fun" stuff.  Unfortunately the elves won't bring me any giant lions or anything good.  The most fearsome things they've brought me are a cougar and some black bears.

Oh yeah, and I will imprison an elven caravan from time to time until they go insane.  Although, I blame that more on themselves rather then my actions.  One guy and a five girls?  You know there's gonna be some beserk catfighting before long....

I am not VERY cruel, I just make my dwarfs from themselves, in they survive a tour in the caverns they get to stay, if they die... they do not get a burial, they do not get remembered.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

I can't help but read the OP as freestyle poetry.

I've been reading. I've been reading as if this was real life, /
and we are all managers of dwarven colonies. /
(Omnipresent will-o-teh-dwarves managers)

"I've been keeping some puppies in cages /
so they can't be adopted, /
and I can slaughter them." /
The same thing with kittens. Other furry animals even. /
Not even the ugly ones, like cows.

You are all sociopaths.

Especially the trash compactor drawbridge maneuvers, /
regarding immigrants. /
Burning people alive to save resources. /
That's not the worst, /
moders, who burn /
people alive to garner resources. /
Baby bones. Baby Bones.

The mayor just wants some leather hats. /
Give him the hats, Jesus.
He need not be drowned, or burned, or both at the same time. /
Fall down large pit and then drowned and burned. /
Impaled as well? /
Noble bones are worth the same as baby bones

Are there any others affected /
in an emotional manner /
by these atrocities? /
Please, let your voice be heard.

This is the single greatest thing I have ever seen!!!
Yeah, I thought OP was meant in humorous fashion...

I have not yet done anything unnecessarily cruel, I don't even kill cats!  Though I did find it amusing when the yearly rhesus macque raid came by and I brutally slaughtered them, their blood completely coating the Depot and the elf traders currently residing there...  Strangely the elves didn't object to that, but when I showed them a wooden bin they couldn't cope...
Oh wait and that time I moved onto an Evil map and watched my dorfs get ripped to pieces by skeletal horses, until the last one died, insane with fear and grief, cowering in a blood soaked ditch... hahaha oh man this game is fantastic.

I keep my dwarves happy, and anyone who tries to break the integrity of the fortress will die a swift yet agonizing death.

If you can't take the heat, stay out of the Magma Forge.

I'm jaded to these horrors. Curse of working on a megaproject, I guess. I lost 350 dwarves in all sorts of horrible manners (especially tantrum spirals, where they ripped each others' limbs off with their bare hands in the process, and madness spread like wildfire). Up to 5-6 reclaims, and all but the last one (which survived) died horribly.

BTW, you want to be further jaded, check out mermaid farming and other similar atrocities awesomeness. Heck, with the potential of zombies forming from improper burial, we already have plans to weaponize them for sieges.

wait what?  Zombies from improper burial?  So its a bad thing that I leave all my donkey/horse/cat/dog/elf/deer corpses out in a mass above ground grave?

It's a possible addition in the next update, from what I heard. I already have an idea for a drop pit that should house some undead if they form, it'll be supplied with cage traps within so I can farm some fort-made undead troops. Umbrellacrop would be an appropriate fort name for such an industry.

This reminds me of the thread that deliberately tried to start a flame war. It's now about how hard it is to legit. upset /troll DF players.

That's what happens, if you say we are sociopaths, your thread turns into a competition to see who is the worst.

. . . Based completely on user speculation.  The Toady One talked about night creatures, and users started talking about zombies.

Though the addition would be interesting, we still have no idea what Toady plans to implement, aside from the idea that "Proper burial is now somewhat more encouraged" to defend against night creatures.  We'll just have to see if there are spooky ghosts as well as dusk ogresses.

I'm the worst, in 40d i gave every organic, gender-biased creature genitals just so i could enjoy the removal of said genitals in combat. :-X
Just be glad I'm too lazy to get it to work right in 31.xx; when they get punched in the tits their tits fly off for no apparent reason, but you can't hit any apertures or built-in parts. The materials system confuses me too...

But I never try to kill my dwarves, I genuinely try to keep them alive and happy. Animals are animals though and I will butcher and devour them at my leisure.
Dwarven society is a sort of feudal socialist/communist society anyway, killing citizens for the 'greater good' ought to be perfectly acceptable to them, and as far as the game goes you cannot simply tell them their demands are illegal or stupid. the only alternative to allowing a noble to imprison or have beaten/killed an innocent worker is to kill said noble before the time comes around.
I, and I really think this goes for most of us here, would never condone performing any of these actions in reality. We're not monsters, we're playing a video game in which nothing is real, and doesn't make any sense anyway.

And we only cage and kill cats, because they adopt dwarves and breed faster than even the rabbits do, causing suffering for all.

Perhaps he merely means that improper burial of dwarves will attract more night creatures. Toady One isn't insane/irrational.

It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who feels a profound duty of care towards the ornery little buggers, though I suspect that few others cry real, manly tears when they die in battle or go mad.
And my respect for the elves went up several notches after I modded entity_default so they'd bring caravan guards.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.
