Hazordhu II
« on: October 16, 2010, 06:33:46 am »

Link to the game (you will need to download the Byond client, which is free): http://www.byond.com/games/F0lak/Hazordhu

IRC Information:
irc.esper.net
#Bay12Dwarves
This is where a lot of communication and planning goes on.  If you don't have an IRC client, you can get the ChatZilla extension for Firefox or download a free IRC client very easily, and it's well worth it.

Current Fortresses:
Duradbesmar - The first outpost, deep in hostile (orc) territory on the Mainland to the north.  Getting past the zombies to get here is difficult enough, and once you're there there's a lot of threats to deal with.  Go here if you want a reclaim-style challenge.

Abaloddom - The main fortress, in an area specifically designed by F0lak (the game creator) for us.  Large caverns, plenty of resources, this is the mountainhome of Hazordhu.  Go here if you want to learn how to play in a reasonably safe environment.

Details on how to get to either fortress can be obtained on IRC or in-game from other dwarves.

Important Note:
This game is RP-enforced.  This means you are playing a character, not yourself.  Try to keep this distinction as much as possible and not take things personally when something happens in-game that you don't like.  It also means that we are not allowed to discuss In-Character (IC) matters Out-Of-Character (OOC).  So please don't post details about your character on IRC or on this board, unless F0lak tells us all it's okay.  We should only be using these methods of communication for big-picture organization, whatever's necessary for us all to play together.

If you start getting stressed, remember: It's Only A Game, and Losing Is Fun!

Original Post:

Hey guys, I just stumbled upon this game on Byond and it's pretty impressive.  The entire world is player-created, including towns and cities and so forth.  There are beasts to be conquered, resources to harvest, and trade skills to learn.  There's also PVP, though it's required that it be in character.  It reminds me a lot of Wurm, though the graphics aren't as pretty of course.

I've just started out and I'm still learning my way around (and I'm not sure how large the world is), but I think I'm going to end up losing a lot of time to this one.  The only problem is there aren't any other players around at the moment.  It seems the perfect game for a gang of dwarfy misfits to invade, build a settlement, and run amok in the name of Armok.  Is anyone interested in joining me?

There are no dwarves unfortunately, but you do get to choose your "heritage," and I chose Northerner ("Your Ancestors were from the mighty Kingdom of the North").  I'm trying to work out how to create everything I need with the few basic tools you are given to start with, but I have big dreams!  And of course this is the sort of game where things go a lot faster if you have a group of people rather than trying to do it all yourself.

My character's name is Androgen.  Chat is RP-only and you're not allowed to post character info on the OOC chat, but we can organize ourselves here if we want to form an outpost.

Put into this light, Dr. Robotnik and Armok could easily have been roommates.

My Byond name is the same as here.

I've looked around the starting area and it seems pretty small. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to get off this island and explore new places, as is implied, or if this is just it, in which case the game is too small to bother with. I've posted on their forums asking but they don't seem too active. If anyone finds the answer to this question let me know!

Yeah, I gathered all the materials it says you need to make a boat (10 nails and a board) and tried to make one, but it still says I don't have enough materials. That's why I'm confused. Can anyone figure it out? Your inventory can only hold 15 objects (counting individually each item in stacks) so I can't see how it's possible to need much more. I tried grabbing more boards but it didn't help.

EDIT: Aha! I asked some players in-game on the OOC channel and figured it out. It's 5 nails, 10 boards - the display when you right-click an item on the skills page to check the material requirements is bugged. It comes out:
Rowboat5
Nails10
Boards

So I've got a boat now, making a paddle...  Time to go explorin'!

I just made a canoe and now I'm rowing north, where the other players have told me the mainland (and lots of room for building) lies!

EDIT: Aaaaaand now I'm stuck.  I lost my internet connection for a second and closed the game, then logged back in.  I'm still on the canoe, but I can't move.  This happened before and the only way to get out of it was to suicide and respawn, then go back to the boat and gather up my possessions (you drop everything when you die).  This time I'm away from the coast, which means I won't be able to get back to my stuff if I suicide.

So it seems boats are awfully buggy.  And since I'll be naked if I suicide and die of cold exposure anyway, I'm thinking it might be best if I just restart with a new character altogether.  Bleh.

EDIT EDIT: Okay, seems if you die normally you don't drop all your stuff, only if you suicide. So I took off all my clothes and let myself freeze to death, it being Shiverstide (winter), and I'm going to try to make another canoe. One way or another I'm going to get off this island eventually!

This sounds like Cantr. Except buggy and with graphics. Too bad Cantr's been hacked and is currently being reconstructed.

Lol, I think I see your canoe. This looks interesting. I'll go and give it a run, maybe we can build some underground fortress. I'm gonna set up a sign as a meeting point directly north of that canoe location, if possible :P

Well I went north in a new canoe and found the north continent.  I explored for about three minutes before I stumbled upon a group of undead who quickly disposed of me and I had to choose a respawn point.  I tried a few of them and mostly they were full of strong aggro creatures who, again, quickly disposed of me.  I'm confused about combat - there don't seem to be any "skills" to speak of that can be developed.  You can equip a weapon or better armor, but how are you supposed to face these tough enemies if you can't get any stronger?

So I can respawn in the newbie town, which is safe, but then I have to build a whole new boat and travel north all over again if I want to keep exploring (being careful to avoid the zombies of course).  I'm thinking of an epic construction project - a bridge that spans all the way to the main continent so we don't have to keep making new boats.  On the other hand, if Megaman is right, and the server gets reset, we'd lose all that work...

Bleh, why is it so hard to find a game where you can modify the world and build your own settlements that isn't either pay to play (I earn a low wage in an eastern european country, and monthly game subscriptions are just too much for me to afford), incomplete, or so full of bugs it's hardly playable?

RPGWorld is free($20/year for "Perks"), but I think it's pretty much dead. I don't think it was ever really popular. On the plus side, the server software for an older version(1.15, which is what I used to play on) is available for free(don't know if whatever you get from the Perks applies, but I assume so). And it has an underground layer.

It's probably a tad buggy, but who says a one-man project with some bugs can't be good, RIGHT?
