As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

You sling your hammer up and crush the creature. The two halves fall to the ground, with trails of green slime hanging off the sides. You also got a bit of slime on you, but that was still kind of disappointing. You expected more fun.

You then decide to examine the slime at your feet. As you are about to scoop some up in a container you asked Khan for, something hits you in the side of the head, and grabs on. You peel it off, and it is a really. big. spider. You remember you've always had arachnophobia as a child, and throw it off screaming. It gets caught in a glob of slime on the walls.

Ask Billy Bob for the wrench, and hand it back to Hendrik.  Then reload and attempt to find another way down.

Try to find a torch or something like that, and throw it down the shaft.

 The funny thing is I actually have arachnophobia.

 Since this is supposed to be a lead mine,look for some lead bars/ore.

You throw the torch down the shaft, and get out a sandwich. Before you can open the container though, you hear a loud rumbling from the bottom of the shaft.
You didn't realize that the slime was flammable.
Luckily the explosion didn't reach far enough to hurt you, but the ladder is now on fire. You also dropped your sandwhich.
"NOO!..."

You follow Johnathan into the upper route, and see that he has tripped over a lever. The lever is linked to a track of some sort. You look on, and see a mine cart! Better yet, it has a full shipment of lead inside, about 30 bars worth of ore!
You grab some of the ore, but then something inside the pile moves. It's another of those ceiling-slug things. Ew...
