Administrator's log, 1th of Granite.
Clovermagic, seemingly weary of the job of managing this fine little speck in the middle of nowhere, has handed the reins over to me. Not quite sure why, but I guess I'm as good as anyone else 'selected' to end up in this little piece of hell.
After my inital look around this place, I've come to a conclusion. Clover was battier than a bugbat. I'd never paid much attention to what everyone was doing, what with trying to ensure we have tasty fish to eat (And not getting mauled by those beady-eyed groundhogs, little bastards that they are.) Now that I'm looking closer, there's more than a little bit of oddity going on. First and foremost, the spiral layout of our quarters plain hurts my head. I've made a note to make some more standardized living arrangements later.
I've also noticed that someone didn't do their homework in metallurgy. Our glorious administrator failed to notice that we have tons of silver bearing ores and gold, but he DIDN'T order them smelted straight to electrum. Instead, for some Dolek-forsaken reason, he had the gold smelted to bars, killing any chance to make more valuable electrum from the ore. On top of that, we've got far too many sets of copper armor and weapons laying around now. Aaand we're almost out of coke, and entirely out of wood, which means we're going to have no way to smelt ANY of this into useful products. On the plus side, we have a moderatly skilled metalcrafter, so once we get this coke shortage sorted we'll be able to quickly turn some of this useless gold into goblets to hawk at the idiot traders. Those morons will trade hundreds of tons of lumber for a stone earring, so Dolek knows what we'll end up with if we hand them gold.
Defense is passable. I notice there's no drills in place to get people inside, and we have no military to speak of. I'll be the one to fix that as well I suppose. The wood shortage will likely put a bit of a damper on that, what with not having any coke to smelt armor and weapons for our fine soldiers-to-be. On the plus side, there's already a well thought out setup to lock the entrance down tight enough to keep out anything, as well as some minor traps. We need to set up some guard animals though, preferably in some nice sealed fortifications to keep them from being stabbed into oblivion. Also, something a bit more lethal than stonefall traps would be good.
Guess I'll get to work on this mess now. Best start with getting some trees cut down... if we're lucky, an elf will get in the way. I need a laugh.

So far so good. I've ordered excavation of a melee training area and a barracks. Both will be located in the entrance hall, in order to facilitate rapid response from our future troops against threats. Unfortunately, I had not checked ahead of time to see what areas had been engraved, and accidentally destroyed an engraving by our artist extroidinare Sigun... he's coping acceptably though.
The woodcutters have been hard at work providing some more wood. With any luck, they will be able to supply enough wood to hold us over until the filthy Elves make their caravan stop. While it disgusts me to have to rely on them for anything, the pretentious annoyances should bring enough wood to supply us for a while.
Seeing as a milker is essentially a worthless profession, I've informed Mafol that his services as a milker will not be needed, and instead he is being appointed as our Militia Commander, by virtue of being the most worthless male available. Once our equipment is set up, he will begin nonstop training to become something halfway worth sporting on a battlefield.
Hope things keep going this smoothly.

Praise be to Dolek! We've gotten a group of migrants!
While there's always a few useless idiots in these groups, we've actually managed to gain a moderately competent armorsmith and weaponsmith, as well as some skilled medical dwarves! This group is actually worth the time to open the gates, which is a refreshing change from what I hear about most migrant groups. The more useless ones (I'm looking at this high master Potash maker) can be drafted into our happy little military.
In more... odd news, our new Military Commander has decided that he refuses to be called by any name other than Sisidem. So long as he doesn't go any more eccentric than that, I think we can accomodate him.
All other work proceeds at a reasonable pace. Our storage space was getting low, so I've had the miners carve a new storage room out near the workroom. I'm starting to draw up plans to lay out my own room and tomb, for the inevitable day the groundhogs finally get me. Since that gold is worthless to us anyways, I think I'll use it for decorations...

One of the migrants informed me that on the way in he spotted the edge of what appeared to be a lignite deposit higher up in the mountainside. This is a fortuntae find, as we can use that lignite to replace wood for a time, until we can manage to get magma set up for our forges. I've ordered a tunnel dug up to the deposit from within our fortress, as I am not willing to compromise our security or put dwarves at risk hauling lignite back into the fortess under that accursed sun.

Thanks to the grace of Dolek, we've found a rather significant vein of lignite. The coke we can refine from this should be sufficient to sustain us for at least a few seasons, provided we use it reasonably. This frees our small supply of wood up to be made into the three B's: Bins, Barrels, and Beds. I've ordered our forge operator to begin smelting this new supply of fuel into bars as quickly as he can.
I've also started excavation for an interesting little project of my own. I've read about methods to cultivate outdoor plants indoors, given the proper thicknesses of soil and carefully constructed roofs. Interestingly, near our farm plots is an area perfectly suited to the needs of this farming technique. With any luck, by the time summer rolls around we'll have a farm plot set up to grow strawberries, giving us the means to make sweet strawberry wine.
EDIT: Edited to add images, since I was a nub and forgot them the first time.
