First post set.

Administrator's log, 1th of Granite.

Clovermagic, seemingly weary of the job of managing this fine little speck in the middle of nowhere, has handed the reins over to me.  Not quite sure why, but I guess I'm as good as anyone else 'selected' to end up in this little piece of hell.

After my inital look around this place, I've come to a conclusion.  Clover was battier than a bugbat.  I'd never paid much attention to what everyone was doing, what with trying to ensure we have tasty fish to eat (And not getting mauled by those beady-eyed groundhogs, little bastards that they are.)  Now that I'm looking closer, there's more than a little bit of oddity going on.  First and foremost, the spiral layout of our quarters plain hurts my head.  I've made a note to make some more standardized living arrangements later.

I've also noticed that someone didn't do their homework in metallurgy.  Our glorious administrator failed to notice that we have tons of silver bearing ores and gold, but he DIDN'T order them smelted straight to electrum.  Instead, for some Dolek-forsaken reason, he had the gold smelted to bars, killing any chance to make more valuable electrum from the ore.  On top of that, we've got far too many sets of copper armor and weapons laying around now.  Aaand we're almost out of coke, and entirely out of wood, which means we're going to have no way to smelt ANY of this into useful products.  On the plus side, we have a moderatly skilled metalcrafter, so once we get this coke shortage sorted we'll be able to quickly turn some of this useless gold into goblets to hawk at the idiot traders.  Those morons will trade hundreds of tons of lumber for a stone earring, so Dolek knows what we'll end up with if we hand them gold.

Defense is passable.  I notice there's no drills in place to get people inside, and we have no military to speak of.  I'll be the one to fix that as well I suppose.  The wood shortage will likely put a bit of a damper on that, what with not having any coke to smelt armor and weapons for our fine soldiers-to-be.  On the plus side, there's already a well thought out setup to lock the entrance down tight enough to keep out anything, as well as some minor traps.  We need to set up some guard animals though, preferably in some nice sealed fortifications to keep them from being stabbed into oblivion.  Also, something a bit more lethal than stonefall traps would be good.

Guess I'll get to work on this mess now.  Best start with getting some trees cut down... if we're lucky, an elf will get in the way.  I need a laugh.

Administrator's Log, 5th of Granite

So far so good.  I've ordered excavation of a melee training area and a barracks.  Both will be located in the entrance hall, in order to facilitate rapid response from our future troops against threats.  Unfortunately, I had not checked ahead of time to see what areas had been engraved, and accidentally destroyed an engraving by our artist extroidinare Sigun... he's coping acceptably though.

The woodcutters have been hard at work providing some more wood.  With any luck, they will be able to supply enough wood to hold us over until the filthy Elves make their caravan stop.  While it disgusts me to have to rely on them for anything, the pretentious annoyances should bring enough wood to supply us for a while.

Seeing as a milker is essentially a worthless profession, I've informed Mafol that his services as a milker will not be needed, and instead he is being appointed as our Militia Commander, by virtue of being the most worthless male available.  Once our equipment is set up, he will begin nonstop training to become something halfway worth sporting on a battlefield.

Hope things keep going this smoothly.

Administrator's log, 19th of Granite

Praise be to Dolek!  We've gotten a group of migrants!

While there's always a few useless idiots in these groups, we've actually managed to gain a moderately competent armorsmith and weaponsmith, as well as some skilled medical dwarves!  This group is actually worth the time to open the gates, which is a refreshing change from what I hear about most migrant groups.  The more useless ones (I'm looking at this high master Potash maker) can be drafted into our happy little military.

In more... odd news, our new Military Commander has decided that he refuses to be called by any name other than Sisidem.  So long as he doesn't go any more eccentric than that, I think we can accomodate him.

All other work proceeds at a reasonable pace.  Our storage space was getting low, so I've had the miners carve a new storage room out near the workroom.  I'm starting to draw up plans to lay out my own room and tomb, for the inevitable day the groundhogs finally get me.  Since that gold is worthless to us anyways, I think I'll use it for decorations...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Administrator's Log, 2nd of Slate

One of the migrants informed me that on the way in he spotted the edge of what appeared to be a lignite deposit higher up in the mountainside.  This is a fortuntae find, as we can use that lignite to replace wood for a time, until we can manage to get magma set up for our forges.  I've ordered a tunnel dug up to the deposit from within our fortress, as I am not willing to compromise our security or put dwarves at risk hauling lignite back into the fortess under that accursed sun.

Administrator's Log, 16th of Slate

Thanks to the grace of Dolek, we've found a rather significant vein of lignite.  The coke we can refine from this should be sufficient to sustain us for at least a few seasons, provided we use it reasonably.  This frees our small supply of wood up to be made into the three B's: Bins, Barrels, and Beds.  I've ordered our forge operator to begin smelting this new supply of fuel into bars as quickly as he can.

I've also started excavation for an interesting little project of my own.  I've read about methods to cultivate outdoor plants indoors, given the proper thicknesses of soil and carefully constructed roofs.  Interestingly, near our farm plots is an area perfectly suited to the needs of this farming technique.  With any luck, by the time summer rolls around we'll have a farm plot set up to grow strawberries, giving us the means to make sweet strawberry wine.

Part two.  I be wordy.

Administrator's Log, 22nd Felsite

Both blessing and disaster today.  There was the dubious blessing of an elven caravan arriving.  As much as I loathe elves, the wood they most certainly have brought will serve us well.  The disaster is that when I met with them, they complained that many goods were stolen from them by rhesus macaques.  This means we need to implement some hunting measures.  We'll see what we can drag out of these lowlife elves as soon as I can drag Clover out of bed and get him to actually trade with them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Administrator's Log, 1st Hematite

Finally got done with all the trading.  Turns out that the elves didn't bring ANY wood this time around, pretty much negating the whole reason I let them into the fort.  In the end, we traded them a bin of worthless copper armor made to train up the old armorer and a bin full of rock salt goods (Good luck drinking your damn green tea out of THAT mug.  Stupid elves.)  We got mostly barrels, some empty and some full of booze of various sorts.  Not that we were running low on booze, but variety is the spice of life.  We also picked up some seeds, sandbags, thread, and crutches.  The thread and crutches remind me that I really should set up a hospital sometime soon.

I'm somewhat disappointed that I didn't manage to get the greenhouse project up and running before summer rolled around, but it's no big deal.  We hit a pretty decent vein of limonite, so we'll have iron to make training armor with.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Will work more on the save tomorrow, as it's 5 AM here, and i've got to help a friend fix her computer.  Stupid trojans.

Awww, I liked my spiral.  It was hilarious watching the dorfs pathing through it.  Also, for the metalworks - useless gold goblets was entirely my plan. XD  And we have a dorf with some levels in armorsmithing, and the mountainhomes wanted pants, so he was making -copper chain leggings- to level himself up, since I didn't want him touching our steel until he was more skilled.  We have about 80 bars of it if I remember.

Also, I was starting on a barracks on the zlevel above the entrance.  It has some archery ranges set up already but that was about it.  I should have given everyone a labelled map of this place, I never plan ahead when I build so my forts can get...interesting.  Everything is always around the main stairwell though. XD

I'm enjoying it so far!

Dorf me!  I don't care what kind of dwarf I get.  I don't plan on taking a turn as overseer, either, unless I happen upon a hidden stockpile of free time.  Just name some random dwarf of your choosing SalmonGod and I'll be happy :)

Finished up my turn, breaking it up into 2 posts.  Btw, Salmongod, didn't see your dorf request till my turn was done man, sorry.

Administrator's Log, 19th of Hematite

Our new chief medical dwarf, Bembul, has begun acting strangely.  She's taken to sitting in the dining hall, muttering quietly to herself about needing a clothing shop.  I've ordered one constructed as quickly as possible, as she is beginning to frighten me and other dwarves.

Administrator's Log, 24th of Hematite

The clothing shop is finished, and Bembul promptly seized it and barred it from everyone else.  She has begun gathering materials to make... something.  I'm not sure what, and I'm not sure I WANT to know what.

Administrator's Log, 25th of Hematite

Well Bembul gathered 2 bolts of pig tail cloth and a single bar of gold, and has now sealed herself in and is working furiously.  Dolek knows what will come out of this, but it should be interesting.  Perhaps she'll even learn something from this... we could use a good clothier, as some of our garments are getting ragged.

Administrator's Log, 2nd of Malachite

Bembul has finished her 'masterpiece'.  Not quite sure what to think of it honestly, since it's a pig tail left mitten studded with gold...  That's right, ONLY a left mitten.  However, it's been appraised as being worth 42880, so I guess it's better than alternative uses of the materials.  She named it "The Stoked Lamentation"... rather odd name.  Apparently she remembers the whole incident, and assures me that she's learned a lot from the experience, so now we have a legendary clothmaker.  Lovely.

Administrator's Log, 7th of Galena

The summer has been rather quiet so far.  Construction of some expanded ore storage and food storage is nearing completion, and the final steps of setting up some strawberry farming are underway.  Also, the human caravan has finally arrived!  Hopefully they've brought some things that are actually useful rather than the crap the elves brought.  Things are moving along nicely, but I'm beginning to understand the reason that Clover handed the job to me... managing this mess is taxing in the extreme.

Administrator's Log, 24th of Galena

Only by the grace of Dolek can I still be writing today.  Tragedy struck, as a sneak attack by those devious goblins came on the heels of the human caravan.  Because I had the foresight to drill our dwarves in emergency situations, we escapef far worse losses than we could have suffered... once the goblins were spotted, I issued the order for all dwarves to fall back into the main living quarters, and scrambled our steel clad warriors, such as they were, to the task of defending our fort.

I ordered the entrance bridge pulled back, only to discover that Clover, in his infinite foolishness, had ordered it designed as a RETRACTING bridge, instead of a drawbridge.  This would have worked far better had it not been built over a brook... the goblins charged directly over the retracted bridge and attacked our soldiers.  I'd like to say our dwarves put up a good fight, but they are raw recruits and did not perform very well.  The tallies are not in yet, but I know we've lost at least one dwarf.  It was fortuitous that the humans were here, as their caravan guards rushed to assist in the defense of the fort and helped immensely in driving the goblins off.

As of now, Sisidem suffered some serious injuries to his ribs and left arm.  I'm scrambling to put together the basics of a hospital in the area that I had been designing to be our barracks, and hopefully our medical team can patch our militia commander back together.

Administrator's Log, 7th of Limestone

The fallout from that goblin attack is finalized.  We lost only one dwarf, praise be to Dolek.  I've pieced together most of what is needed for a hospital, and Sisidem is resting safely in a bed, awaiting treatment.  He lost an ear, but otherwise seems to have no permanent damage done.  With some luck, he should make a full recovery fairly fast.

We finished trading with the humans.  They brought very little that we actually needed.  I bought all the metal bars they had, as well as their wood, and a waterskin for our troops.  I also purchased a good amount of meat of various kinds, to keep variety in our meals.  All of this was purchased for three gold goblets, showing that traders seem to have absolutely no sense when it comes to comparative value.

This incident with the goblins has made me feel my own mortality all the more firmly.  I've ordered the miners to carve out a space for a tomb in the catacombs for me, so that I may have a proper place to rest when things finally take their course.  In life I'll ask for no more finery than a common dwarf, but I'd like to rest easily, so I've ordered a gold sarcophagus created for me, so that I may sleep soundly in death.

Administrator's Log, 5th of Sandstone

Praise be to Dolek, Sisidem seems to have made a full recovery.  He's still showing some injury on the smashed rib, but other than that he seems to be fine, and is up and about once again.  I've ordered the tedious process of hooking up the danger room lever begun, and hopefully by the time winter comes we'll have a good system set up to train our remaining militia without having to resort to live fire.

I've also had a well channel dug for our hospital, for faster feeding and watering of wounded dwarves.  At some point our hospital may need to be relocated deeper into the fortress, but for now this area will do.  In an interesting but morbid twist, we managed to find Sisidem's ear.  It's been stored in the catacombs, so that it may be buried with Sisidem when the final end comes his way.

Administrator's Log, 9th of Sandstone

Logem has been seized by some sort of spirit.  We can hear her chanting some sort of dark chant as she works... she seized our only metalforge and an electrum bar and is currently fast at work.  Dolek only knows what will come out of this.

Administrator's Log, 13th of Sandstone

Logem has finished her masterpiece.  It is an absolutely exquisite figurine of our glorious queen, cast from electrum.  Unfortunately, upon finishing the figurine the spirit which inspired Logem departed, and Logem reported to me that she felt as if she had been asleep for the last week, and learned nothing from the experience.  Ahh well, the figurine appraised at 48,000, so it was well worth the materials used.

Administrator's Log, 5th Timber

The death of one of our militia has been haunting my dreams.  Due to this, I've made a decision.  As I am responsible for the well-being of our fortress, and under my watch we lost a military man, I will take his place.  As of now I've ordered another suit of armor and axe forged, and as soon as it is finished I will begin training to defend this fortress with my life.

My sarcophagus has been installed, and I have taken the liberty of having some of the useless gold forged into statues to place in my tomb.  I've also had a pair of doors crafted, so that upon my death the tomb can be shut and then walled in so that I may rest in peace.

In less morbid news, my greenhouse project is finally finished!  We have a small farming plot set up now that can grow any above-ground crop needed... I've ordered it to produce strawberries year-round for the time being.

Remaining part of my turn.

Administrator's Log, 25th Timber

The caravan from the dwarven mountainhomes arrived today.  The meeting with our liaison has gone well, and I've requested supplies of smelted alloys, large amounts of wood, silk cloth, lye and barrels of every alcohol they can bring.  We are no longer in dire need of anything in particular however, so I believe we are far more secure than we were this time a year ago.  Has it really been nearly a year?  Amazing.

I've bought the metal bars they brought... you never know when a specific metal will be best suited for a task, so a little of everything would be good.  I also bought all the alcohol and wood they had, as well as a bin full of silk and plant cloth (one each).  Finally, a little meat and some splints for future injuries... all traded for a few gold mugs.  Honestly, the fortress will never want for anything at this rate, not with the supplies of gold and galena ores to smelt into electrum.

My tomb nears completion, as well as the armor and axe I forged for my future battles.  Hopefully both will be used for a long time.

Administrator's Log, 1st Moonstone

Winter is upon us, as well as another goblin ambush.  Nobody died this time around, however one of our militia was gravely wounded.  Oddly enough, he has REFUSED treatment, even though his right hand has been hacked off entirely.  As he is no longer fit for military service, I have removed him from that... Dolek be with him, that he may survive his injuries, however I doubt this will be the case.  A casket has been prepared in the catacombs for him.  The liaison was caught out in the assault and did not survive, so I'm not sure what will come of that.  Yet another failure on my part I suppose.

Administrator's Log, 9th Moonstone

My armor and weapon are finally finished.  The training room I've designed is also almost finished, with only a few more mechanical connections needed.  I am now donning my armor for the first time, and find that it's weight is pleasant.  It feels much lighter than the weight of the mantle of command... I believe I will be following in clover's footsteps at the end of this year, projects be damned.

I've ordered the bridge at the entrance ripped out and rebuilt.  When I'm done, it will seal the entrance properly, allowing us to safeguard our people.  I should have seen it sooner.  Lives would have been saved then.

In happier news though, our injured militiaman had Dolek on his side, and has somehow survived his injuries so far.  I believe he will make as much of a recovery as can be made with only one hand... we found his hand still in the grip of one of the dead goblins, and have placed it in the catacombs so that when he dies he may go to the Stone with both hands.

Administrator's Log, 10th Opal

I've taken to this training with a vengeance.  It is much to my liking, and I think I shall enjoy having this be my life's work.

One of our jewelers was possessed by a spirit of creativity today.  She seized a jeweler's shop and has begun a mysterious construction, and if the pattern holds should convert the seized goods into quite a nice trinket.

Administrator's Log, 15th Opal

The jeweler finished her trinket.  She made a gemstone statue valued at about 8400.  I think it'll make a fine piece in my tomb, right next to my sarcophagus.  Speaking of the tomb, it is finally complete.  I shall rest easy when my life finally comes to an end.

Administrator's Log, 21st Obsidian

We had another goblin incursion today.   I had my first taste of combat... and I found the flavor sweet indeed.  Apparently I impressed my fellow dwarves, because they have started calling me Steelentranced the Lone Ace.  No deaths from this skirmish, but Medtob did take some serious injuries... had both arms and legs broken.  He'll most likely live though

Administrator's Log, 23rd Obsidian

Yet ANOTHER squad of goblins!  These little bastards are determined to kill us all.  I ordered the refitted bridge sealed shut, so now the goblins have no means to enter our fortress.  I shall not be opening it again, as we have no need to do so at this time.  May the goblins rot outside with the corpses of their filthy brethren.

Administrator's Log, 27th Obsidian

This will be my final log as administrator of Ironblows.  This year has been the most draining and challenging of my life.  However, I do believe I have secured a promising future for this fortress, and will stake that claim with my very life.

Our food stocks are sufficient for several months at least, and once sealed in our fortress is impregnable.  We have sufficient stocks of coal and lignite to fuel the furnaces for some time, and I've marked out significant further deposits of coal.  Trade goods can easily be forged from the electrum I've had smelted, and our metalsmith is becoming quite skilled, as I've been training him on copper barrels and bins.  The greenhouse will supply us with a significant quantity of fresh strawberries year-round now, so combined with our already extensive underground crop supply we will not want for variety in our food and drink should we desire it

My suggestions to the next administrator are to use some of the iron I've discovered to forge weapon traps to replace the stonefall traps we've got lining the entrance.  Keep the danger room training center running, as it is quite effective.

I'm handing the position of administrator over to Xenos.  He has proven himself most capable as a crafter, and is quick-witted to boot.  I shall continue my martial training, to atone for the lives lost under my supervision.  May Dolek forgive me and watch over this fortress.

Just for the love of god, don't open the main gate until you are ready to deal with the goblins!  We've got 2 fighting dwarves who are legendary shield users and fighters, but they could use some more training before being outnumbered heavily.  You should have more than enough food and booze to last through till you can train a few more useless dwarves, and I think we've got an extra set of steel armor you can throw on someone.

Good luck :D
