Kael starts working on Elemental.
« on: October 14, 2010, 04:29:59 pm »

http://www.stardock.com/about/newsitem.asp?id=2056

We all know how bad was the launch of elemental, driven by bugs and lack of a coherent design. alot of the bugs have been fixed by now, and by the looks of it, will continue to recieve technical support to the engine, and now with kael, maybe the bigger problem of the design will get fixed too.

while that remain to be seen, and as much as i was rightly skeptical about Elemental while even in the early beta, i now hope to see it rise to glory, as stardock starts to prove that they do intend to fix the broken.

At first I was like KaelGotDwarves Kael? But isn't he monking pretty heavy-duty? Then I clicked and realized it was Fall from Heaven Kael and got pretty excited. I have to say, I'm liking the direction Elemental's heading.

I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

I have never heard of this person, but hiring anyone who actually knows about good design can only be a positive thing for Elemental.

Fall from heaven 2 was a great major well-known mod... i help Kael out by listing some music from Arcana into the game, making it sound more gothic and add in a new set of sound from his mod. after hearing from this new's... I am somewhat happy that he got a job, and it's a well-deserved reward for making a great mod and gaining so much publicity around the internet that he gotten the job. Just like Icefrog who made DOTA got hired by Valve. I hope Kael is taking another major project into bringing this mod back to light and not only that... make this game look better then it was when it was released.

Yep, Kael failed with his own game because he doesn't have a required funding and some managing skills, but his design capabilities are really great.

He offered to help for free some time before and Frogboy didn't want to get him in (for many reasons, I don't know exactly why). The community was talking about it a lot... At least now we have a chance to see some good mechanics implemented, because the original Elemental (if you don't look at bugs which can be fixed eventually) was a good amount of interesting concepts and ideas and a bad game mechanics/gameplay-wise. Now if only they had some guy like Sephi working on AI, and it could become one of the best games ever :).

Ugh, I don't agree that it's a leading "PC games developer", knowing the amount of problems they have, but I am glad that the guys have guts to move on and on despite of their fail and to fix it eventually (looking at GalCivII: it was bug-ridden and simply not fun at first, and evolved into a nice game later), so I am almost sure that Elemental has a future.

...wait... what?

As far as I know, you don't need money to make a mod for Civ 4... his game was awesome, beyond awesome... he made a decent storyline, each race is different, and not only that, his mod gave tons of modder's to make modmod for the game, expectantly Valkrionn's Rise of Erebus that gave the game a whole new feel. I don't think he failed at his mod at all... if it was, it would not gain any fame at all.

They were trying to make their own standalone game but the funding fell through.

Still, no one expected someone like Kael to create a mod for an existing game that is arguably a game in its own right.  Just bloody spectacular.  I think he'll be good for Elemental, and the whole Stardock group as a whole. *Gives a big thumbs up*

Am I the only one that didn't think much of fall of heaven and so finds this to be less than hopeful news for a game I was hoping to be wonderful once the bugs are fixed?

I like how Fall for heaven morphs the battlefield but I never removed it from Civilisation 4.

No, you aren't. I really tried to have fun with FFH2, but never got it. I read it is intended as a multiplayer mod; maybe this was the problem, I always played it single-player.

And I really disliked the emo feel of the mod.

Well, thats not to say this guy is a one-trick pony. Even if you didn't like FFH, it may have just not been your type of game - and it doesn't mean Kael isn't capable of delivering something you do want to play. So, hopefully, it works out.

That is true, I will withhold judgement until I see what happens. But at the same time I'm not going to get positive about it without basis either ;)
