Hmm... this is odd.
« on: October 14, 2010, 02:34:11 pm »

Hey everyone,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my current fort (I'm somewhat of a noob and I sort of spend the entire first year on getting basic workshops going, cutting gems and starting a farming industry. I think I made the latter too large but thats not what this is about atm...), I have put multiple "cut trees" designations down but they don't show up as jobs on the job list and none of my dwarfs are cutting wood. Just when I finally get some wooden crossbows this happens -_-.

It's just immoral to let elves leave the map without being robbed at least a little.

Do you have a dwarf with the "Wood Cutting" labor enabled?  If not, that is probably the problem.

If you are using the lazy newb pack, I recommend trying out dwarf therapist for easy dwarf labor management.  :)

Basic checklist, you will need:

  • Axes
  • Woodcutting labour turned on
  • Designated trees
  • Dwarves with the labour able to reach the trees

Are you sure you have all of those?

1st: is there a quick way to check your items? There's a good chance these got lost somewhere...
2nd: check
3rd: check
4th: what?

3 Dwarfs ready to cut the hell out of the forrests. I'm not that much of a noob that I don't use DT ;) but thanks for the hint.

Hit z, move over to stock (with the arrow keys), hit enter, then look for weapons on the list. I think it's on the first page

Sometimes burrows, or walls, or bridges will stop your woodcutters being able to actually reach the trees they want to hurt. It happes.  :(

Isn't it DT that has problems with enabling dwarves to woodcutting/mining labours? If you did that through DT, try enabling them through the vanilla game menus.

Go to your woodcutters and press 'v', then check their inventory. They should be holding an axe in one of their hands.

This has been fixed in DT a while ago, I believe.

Militia axemen that are also woodcutters can be buggy, so something else to watch out for.

Don't know if it a DT thing or a DF thing but in Dwarf Therapist you CAN NOT assign both Mining and Woodcutting on the same dorf.  If U having mining selected and select woodcutting it unselects mining.  Is that how it is suppose to be? Still new but I dont need to worry about it since I have enough dwarfs that I try to keep timing consuming tasks separate.

Yes, it is supposed to do that. You can only have one labor that requires a tool enabled at a time(Woodcutting requires axes, Mining needs picks).

if you have woodcutting enabled on a dwarf, if you have an axe at all available he will equip it, so you could just look at his inventory.

Training axes work, so don't worry about that

Hey you guys, sorry for taking so long to reply but my exams are comming up and I kind of forgot about my fort. I just thought of it again and I checked what you guys said. I found the axes, they we're put on the small weapons stockpile but the dwarfs aren't wielding them. I deleted the stockpile (as they're the only weapons :/) but it doesn't seem to have an effect.

But its not about the axes or wether or not the labors are activated on the dwarfs themselves, the woodcutting jobs don't show up in the job list. Thats the most important bit, they don't even show up.

I have been placing some walls and smoothing some stone, but thats about 10 z-levels down under the ground, so that doesn't make a lot of sense...

Edit: Another thing I noticed, the dwarfs won't go to the floor above my main floor, they won't even pick up the cage I put down on their (again noob action, I thought I could capture animals with them :P).

I know it's been a while since I've been here, but the problem has repeated itself in my newest fortress. Something is going wrong here, new designations no longer show up on the job lists and they're not being carried out by my dwarfs. This time my dwarfs aren't digging any more, nor are they removing slopes or gathering plants.

Why is this happening? The new fort is on a different computer this time (an old laptop due to my current computer going through repairs, something was wrong with the networking) so it can't be hardware related...

I'm pretty sure that any kind of mining, woodcutting, or plant gathering designation doesn't show up on the job list until a dwarf targets some rock to dig or a tree to cut down. So that bit's working fine, it's probably the least important bit. The problem here is that they aren't attempting the designated tasks for some reason.

I suspect the problem is that they can't reach any of the places you want them to go to. What do your current stairs and ramps look like? It's not an uncommon mistake for a newbie to build ramps the wrong way and then their dwarves can't go up them.

Also, what version are you on? The actual version number, don't just say "the latest version" because I actually have seen someone assume they were on the latest version and it turned out the version they were playing was five or six releases ago.
