I had a horrible fever-dream the other night: A tabletop (or comp-assisted) RPG using dice with only prime-numbers of sides. E.g. d2, d3, d5, d7, d43, d97 etc.

I dont know why, and I don't know how, but I think it might be... interesting if nothing else.

I uh, kind of figured this one out.

See, it's a game where you roll dice to determine the strength with which you do an action, but if you roll a number that can be factored, you must factor it and apply the results to multiple actions. So if you try to attack someone and roll a 6, you don't actually attack them at 6 strength- you attack them at 2 or 3, and use the other number for some other action. Similarly, if they roll a 4 to dodge, they actually dodge at 2, and maybe use the second 2 to counterattack or something. I guess that could result in interesting counterattack chains.

So, why roll with prime dice then? No particular reason, but it does mean that if you roll the highest number possible, it's extremely significant, since you're potentially getting a 7 or 13 in something where a 1 or 3 is common.

If multiple actions could be used for flurried attacks on the same target, or if split defense rolls could be turned into counterattacks, you could have some very interesting (and computer-friendly) counter-counter-counterattack chains. Add cards or other fluctuating status conditions and the game could be truly intriguing.

....that is brilliant.
I love the idea of flurries or counters... roll a 6 on a d7 to attack and you hit with 2 and 3. Roll a 4 on def and dodge with 2 and counter with 2. Roll a 7 and freeking CRIT.

Status conditions could be interesting.... I'll give this more thought after class today...

Does it have to be factored into primes? Because if you roll a 12, you would get a 3, a 2 and another 2, meaning you have to take 3 actions. Else you'd get a 3 and a 4 or a 2 and a 6 for 2 actions.

I was wondering about that myself. It would probably depend on how actions worked/what actions were available, since a mass of minor actions could work or not work all sorts of different ways.

We must write a system for this! Who is with me?

I was thinking something where instead of adding bonuses to your rolls you would use a larger dice instead. Of course, they would have to be prime numbered dice. If you roll a number that can be factorised then you factorise it and choose the highest prime factor as your final roll. This would stop boring situations, with high or low rolls being very unlikely and it would end up with very dramatic gameplay.

The d3 is a lozenge, so...  I mean, strictly speaking, it's not a fair die...  Worst come to worst, you can always use a random number generator.  Or, say, for a d3, use a d6, numbered 1,2,3,1,2,3.
