Mining accident involving quantum vacuum leaves 6 dead.
« on: October 13, 2010, 02:37:41 pm »

While mining in my new fortress, I came across a large pit deep underground that descends 16 Z levels to the next series of caverns. I planned to make a staircase going down the chasm and a checkpoint before the staircase. While mining out a path, I assigned a bunch of my masons to construct the floors around the checkpoint and the path to the soon-to-be-made staircase. I accidentally cut down one of the stalactites hanging above the chasm, and it created a 'cave-in'. The stalactite was only one square big, but the vacuum it created sucked down a bunch of dwarves with it, most of whom were OVER 20 SQUARES AWAY, AND AROUND A CORNER! There were no survivors.

Are... are you sure that's how it works? I didn't think there was air let alone air pressure.

They obviously all ran over to watch it hit the ground.

Sounds pretty close to reality.  In real-life cave-ins, there is a massive air blast created that can be as dangerous as the cave-in.  There's a reason cave-ins suck.

And yes, if you were next to the top of the section that suddenly collapsed, the air flowing in to fill that void could suck you in, presumably even a fairly long ways away if you're down a tunnel, but it WOULD have to be an awfully large cave-in for that to happen...

Hey, this is a game where a Dragon takes up one tile. A stalactite one tile wide could still be huge.

This. Because this stalactite is larger than fifty dragons! Fifty dragons can get easily into one tile, and there will be room for more.

In fact, you could fit OVER 9000 Dragons.

That's what happens when I listen to Keith Olbermann all day long. :P

I still don't understand how even one tile of stalactite can suck in a bunch of dwarves who were over 20 feet away and around a corner, unless the thing was made out of pure slade or Neutronium.

Here's something a little screwy. A baby got injured in the 'collapse', despite not being anywhere even near the thing when it fell. The baby lost its mother in the collapse, but only sustained broken bones in half its body. It died from an infection several months later.

If the mother was there then the baby was too. Dwarves carry their babies everywhere with them. Heck even into battle. In fact, I recently had a baby kill a kobold via a well placed kick.

I know, but why the baby wasn't dragged down, too is a mystery to me. Even more so why the baby got injured when it wasn't anywhere near falling debris.
