Is this really possible?  I know there are volcanoes in the ocean, but I wouldn't think places around exposed magma vents would be freezing (though it's quite possible this is just an artifact of magma heating stuff to only about 132 degrees right now, in which case there's probably not much available in the way of desirable changes).  For a reference, see the Pregenerated worlds page and the seed 0 picture (there's also a fair number of other exposed vents in the same freezing area).

And life continues to be just as strange (sometimes stranger, but not in this case) as fiction.  I do notice, however, that there's no snow on the nearby slopes...
