What does death feel like?
« on: October 13, 2010, 02:27:51 am »

What it says on the tin, I guess. A lot of accounts from people who were brought back to life by shock say it's something like peaceful and tranquil, once the initial moment of pain passes. It's.. Weird. I've been in contact with someone when they've died, and I can say it sort of feels like you can feel their soul passing from their body.

Like falling asleep or unconscious. then nothing, in the same sense that there was nothing before you were born.

As many people know, I died on one occassion. When I died, I found myself in a place filled with many clouds, but I myself upon a long stone road that weaved through them.
The road was indeed very long, and full of perils, but eventually I made it to the end and trained with a martial arts master on his secret planet until I was strong enough to return and save my friends from some dangerous aliens.
Later, they would wish me back to life using a magic dragon.

Nobody can answer you. We can get 'what's it feel like to almost die', fine, but we have no idea if that's the same as actually dying. Personally, I believe something similar to nbonaparte: Death involves the death of the brain, which means we can't process anything and thus, nothingness.

Fake edit: doubleninja'd with silliness.

I think I can pretty categorically say that Captain is wrong on this one. I myself was killed in Vietnam while trying to strike down my closest friend who had gone mad and starting killing civilians. I was eventually revived alongside him as part of a crack cyborg counter-terrorist squad, and mission by mission, we both regained our memories. Fortunately, through the love of a plucky investigative journalist and a muscle-enhancing serum, I was able to defeat him.

I still have a problem with needing to be constantly cooled, though.

I'm thinking it would be like being in a coma without the waking up part.

I don't think anyone here can give you a definitive answer, but we certainly can help you experience it  ;)

You see, the problem with people experiencing death is that if they're dead, they can't tell you about it. If they're revived, their brain could just make up some crackpot story about what happened while they were gone.

This, pretty much.

Any experiences people tell you are a result of all the chemicals being released from a dying brain.

They did not experience death, they experienced dying. Big difference.

The process of dying is going to feel different from one person to another.

Actually being dead, though, is the same for everyone.  We all know exactly what that's like, some people just don't want to admit it.  We've all been non-existent before.  And we'll be non-existent again.
