It doesn't bother me that bad anymore, but when I was a kid it took me several rentings of that book from the library to bring myself to read the story that was on the same page.

It wasn't like arms-flailing, screaming, jump out of my seat kind of reaction, more of a wide-eyed, jump a little reaction.

kind of like lol generally means a chuckle if anything.

I don't mean to troll, but that can't really be what you guys think over it? It's a very detailed animation, and moves right too. It's even the kind of smile and eyes people would usually relate to "content" or "curious". What's wrong? Why is it "freaky"?

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

The proportions, the hair, lots of things about it. If you can get over the proportions of the face, it's kind of cheerful. The solid black eyes don't help, of course...

Well, presumably the eye-balls were removed at some point, and I think it would be worse if the thing had gone and gotten new ones.

I honestly can't explain it.

It just looks...wrong.

It's like Slenderman. Obviously is or was human or humanlike, but now there is a touch of the Other about it. It just looks and feels wrong. It's similar enough to what we are to be familiar, but different enough that we immediately realize that it is not Us, it is the Other.

Of course it isn't human, but neither are a thousand other beings described and depicted on this forum. You don't think the same things about cartoon characters with their distended heads? Or the RTD healing golems? Or DF's titans and forgotten beasts? So many things that are so flawed, so distorted, or so Other. Those here make things like that, and worse, regularly in their games; for entertainment. To generate similar images in their imagination, with far greater detail and solidity.
 What makes this one special?
It's obviously undead, although it could be of ghost or zombie (because of the chest shading). It lost an arm at some point, and replaced its left hand with a broken right hand. The nose was broken, and the mouth was definitely cut the way it is now, although the symmetry makes me think it was from a controlled method of injury other than torture. The expanded appearance (in addition to a large figure), and the hair make me think drowning was the cause of death. Although another, more immediate, possibility is that it eats things to absorb them, like that old Jeepers Creepers thing. Although it's probably not proactive in this endeavor, considering it's still ill equipped.
It obviously has history... and is that was makes it so disturbing? ;⌡ A creature from Beyond that didn't just appear from nothingness a short time ago?

I'd say it's somewhere near the bottom of the uncanny valley.

You mean the woman that Nikov is married to? Nikov might be married to someone, because Nikov is married. Nikov doesn't always post, but when he does, Nikov is married.

But seriously, that was kind of mean. Stop the hate, bro.

Words

As I said, it's hard to explain. This thing is obviously human, but still something about it is not quite right. It's not a feeling that can be explained in words. Barbarossa has a point, it's to do with the Uncanny Valley. The reason cartoon characters, golems, titans, and countless other fantastical humanoid beings are nonthreatening and not scary are because they are very obviously not human, but human enough that we can identify with them on an emotional level.

The .gif file, on the other hand, is very much human, or at least used to be, but it's been warped juuuust enough to be too human for most people to identify with it on any level. It is thus an unknown, and the automatic reaction of humans to the unknown is fear.

Thus, that .gif can be described as scary.

this is kinda off topic, but one thing that scared me to death when i was a kid (and still does) was the ReDeads from Zelda Oot

they jump on you back after paralyzing your entire body from their bloodcurdling screams and attempt to eat you brains

There's more than three Scary Stories to tell in the Dark books. They all have the same sort of art.

This one was stand alone, and did not have similar art to SSTTITD
