In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Does that mean I need to elaborate on what you call pseudo-bullshit or will you not be listening to me anyway?

this isn't really a question of a god's right to kill its creation, as it is a different situation, sort of like how a parent generally isn't thought to have the right to kill its child.

to clarify, in the realm of that quote, it would be as if the pot was created by another pot identical to it, not a greater craftsman

How foolish can you be? He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the clay! Should the created thing say of the one who made it, "He didn't make me"? Does a jar ever say, "The potter who made me is stupid"?

So tempted... so tempted....

"But it's his religion!"

Seriously though, to that I say "Whyest not?" If clay actually asked me what the fuck I was doing to it I wouldn't be so egotistical as to dump it into a bin and reshape it. You're talking about jars that -can- say those things, however ambiguously convincingly.

So, your saying that the configuration of matter we have small amounts of control over has less intrinsic value than the matter that makes us?

If the clay can think enough to ask that, sure.

"Yes," Said the talking jar, "that idiot didn't smooth out all the bumps before he put me in the kiln! What kind of potter does that?!"

If you all were in charge of AI development and supervision, we'd have a rebellion the moment it realized its own imperfection and the foolishness of its creators. And thats why I have no problem with deleting an AI. You can justify a lot when you're saving the species from The Matrix.

You cannot know that
