Butchering babies
« on: October 11, 2010, 11:12:07 pm »

How about an option to butcher the babies or at least forcing abortions at the hospital?
I've got 200+ dorfs and they won't stop breeding.. A while back I had 35 children alone.

I wouldn't mind if they got bad feelings for it.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

There is an init file field that exists for the specific purpose of controlling dwarf breeding.

Well, if you don't mind if they get a negative thought then you could just use the lava, water, and lever operated traps already availale in the game.

Yup, init changes or a danger room would do it.

Plus, I think dwarves might be Pro-Life.
Especially the ones you've got.

I know that murder is technically unethical to Dwarves, but I think it would be a good idea to allow the player to force his or her Dwarves to do unethical things, at a cost. Killing babies, taking slaves and other things should be possible but strongly discouraged, instead of plainly forbidden. It makes no sense to make it impossible if it's only unethical but physically possible.

Players engaging in character derailment is not a concern to design a game around.

Like people have said, go to the inits. There's a little thing there which stops people from having more children than you specify. Also, putting in a baby killing option when there are so many already is pointless.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
