I need some advice
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:12:41 am »

My current fortress is about two years old and it is probably my most successful one. I am somewhat ready to estabilish the military and I have already created a hospital. I need some serious advice, because I want my fortress to become even more glorious so it's fall will be more hilarious. So, my questions are:
1. What type of dwarves should I put in the military? Can a dwarf lead a "full-time job" and a military career at the same time?
2. I have some basic stuff in my hospital, namely 2 two tables, a tractation bench and I have some soap in the bar stockpile, as well. What else should be there?
3. I'm planning to use a danger room to train my dwarves. Should I just tell them to patrol in the room? And do I really have to have a dwarf pulling a lever for the room to work?
4. I've breached a cavern. Should I dig deeper, after I get the military up and running? How far underground are the magma seas?

(1) If you're planning on using a danger room, just assign the men. Babies tend to get impaled. Peasants make good soldiers, as do those with fairly useless skills (animal caretaker, fish dissector). With a bit of fluffing around with schedules, I *think* you can have dwarves with civilian and military careers. I haven't tried this though.
(2) Beds. I build my hospitals with a table and traction bench adjacent to every bed. Don't think it's required, though. You'll also want containers (boxes & bags) built in the zone, this is where your dwarves will store cloth, thread, soap and splints. Gypsum plaster isn't working properly yet, but you will need splints to mend broken bones. You won't need crutches, they don't work yet either.
(3) If you define their barracks from a weapon rack/armour stand in the danger room, they'll Individual Combat Drill in there. Having them on patrol too long causes unhappy thoughts, and dehydration. Yes, you'll need someone constantly pulling the lever, unless you set up some automated machinery. Don't forget the double doors or some other way of keeping pets out.
(4) With default world gen, magma is around 100z below the surface. How deep you dig is entirely up to you ;)

Good luck, and have Fun!

I think I've seen dwarves with jobs like "applying cast" in 0.31.12. They were carrying buckets.

Don't quote me on that.
Cacame channels aquifers into submission by staring at them. Cacame is so badass, kobolds give him their children to leave them alone. If Hidden Fun Stuff digs too far down, they hit Cacame. Cacame once took a Tantrum Spiral and impaled four enemies on it.

You should not create a bar stockpile inside a hospital.  You should just establish the zone, and then put beds and coffers in it.  Nothing else.

Dwarves will fill the hospital's coffers with thread, cloth, soap, splints, and buckets.

Tables are broken.  They lead to surgeries being started and then aborted on them.  Surgeries performed in the dwarves' beds work properly.

I don't know whether traction benches are broken or not.

Plaster is broken.  Don't make any, and don't take any from the traders.  It won't be stored in the hospital.  And if a dwarf does attempt to apply a cast using plaster, he'll just get stuck at the well unable to figure out how to put water into a bucket.  (There are workarounds, but seriously, just DON'T use plaster; use splints instead; and then you'll never face that bug.)

Crutches are broken.  Dwarves with a missing or permanently-damaged leg are worse than dead.  They will never, ever move again.  So you might as well not bother making any crutches either.
